This has probably been discussed before, but does the common app automatically assign your first recommender to every school you are applying to? My one teacher sent their rec letter in first and is now assigned to all of my colleges. My other teacher who is giving me a rec letter is going to send one in later. For colleges that only accept one rec letter, I want the second teacher’s rec letter to be used. Will I be able to do that once the second rec letter gets in?
If you’re talking about Naviance - here is the response I got from Common App:
“The way the Naviance system does the recommenders is that they will send an email notification and provide them with a list of ALL the colleges on your list. Unfortunately, Naviance does not make it clear to the teachers which school they need to submit to. That’s why it’s always good to remind your recommenders.”
So basically, if you ask for a recommendation from one teacher for a particular school in naviance, that teacher will receive an email saying they can submit their rec to ALL schools on your common app dashboard. It’s up to the teacher to stick with what you tell them or what’s in naviance which has to be utterly confusing for them!
Common App also told me that if you contact them prior to submitting your application to a specific school, you could potentially remove them and contact the correct recommenders to then submit. My daughter ended up leaving it alone in the end.
