Available seats and waitlist numbers?

Hi, I am an incoming freshman and missed orientation so I am pretty lost. However, I'm making my way and I can enroll for classes on Friday, three days before the rest of the school can. S I'm looking through classes and trying to finalize my desired schedule. I need a certain schedule since I will be commuting and it's about an hour away. I found five classes that are all on the same days. All of the classes have a 'seats available' number and a 'waitlist' number. Most of my classes have seats availabe and no one on the waitlist. But one has 2 seats availble and 4 on the waitlist and one has 8 seats available and 9 on the waitlist. What does this mean? Why are they on the waitlist if there's already seats available?
If I get placed on the waitlist for these classes, what is the chance that I will get in? I really need these classes..

I can’t help you with the wait-list since my school doesn’t do that but I would say you have a decent chance at getting into the classes if you are wait listed/unable to get in right now. A good deal of people will drop or switch around stuff during the first week. I can’t say it’s for certain you’ll get in and you probably shouldn’t bank on it but also don’t stress too much.

What Humanoid said, and have a backup class or two in case some of those don’t work out. As for the 8 seats being available and 9 people being on the waitlist, that’s because when spots open up, your system might not automatically enroll the first person on the waitlist; instead, it notifies them and gives them 24 hours (or some similar timeframe) to enroll in the course, and after that period they are dropped from the waitlist and the next person is notified.
