I'm looking at boarding schools this year, and was just curious how big rooms are on average.

Well, here at NMH we have a good size for average rooms, I live in Overtoun (boys dorm) one of the oldest in campus but it’s really good! We gage huge rooms common areas and good closets :)

Have not gage*

My room’s rather large, maybe 5x6m

My senior year at Andover I had a two-room single! And very large doubles my sophomore and junior years (although I did have a pretty tiny single my freshman year).

Totally varies from school to school. Rooms can be as small as glorified broom closets (usually singles) or quite vast. Be assured that what they show you on the tour is generally something they consider to be well above average–hopefully you’ll get more responses here to get a better sense of the range. In our case, DC2 (not at Loomis) had a broom closet single in a big dorm last year; this year, another single room, but in a house, and the room is probably 2.5 X larger than last year!

The size can vary greatly within the same school, from dorm to dorm. It can even vary greatly within the same dorm.

Dorm size can vary by seniority so your room size should get better every year. On your tour, you will probably be shown a senior prefect triple. At the end of the year there may be a lottery or room pick based on how many infractions you have had during the year. Whatever is left goes to the new students, so new sophomores or new juniors might find themselves with a tiny room. Usually a freshman room will be pretty small and fit your bed/dresser/closet/desk/chair, but in a double or triple you can free up space if you loft your beds.

DC has one about the size of a prison cell. It’s very cozy!

It’s also easy to keep neat as there is no room to make much of a mess.

Mine’s about 5x6. Make sure you keep your room neat at all times, or there will be no way to get to the door! glances meaningfully at roommate

My daughter and her roommate have a very large room, and it’s the smallest one on their floor. They each have a huge walk in closet, and there are additional floor-to-ceiling cabinets. They are freshmen…the building is Victorian era, hence the large spaces.
