In the Princeton Review, it says the average h.s. gpa is 4.0. I assume that is weighted, right? I'm just going by the normal 4 point.

If weighted, that seems kind of low.

If weighted, that seems kind of low.

What would it be low relative to? I think the average hs uva gpa is somewhere between 4.0-4.1 weighted.

Low compared to a lot of kids on CC who are applying. I am surprised that UVA would use a weighted GPA in their STATS given the fact that high schools weigh classes differently. However, on a 4.0 scale, I did not think it would be possible for UVA to have a 4.0 average gpa.

dude its not weighted. That seems to be the average. UVA is highly GPA minded. The GPA seems to be between 3.8-4.0. If you check other ivy leagues in princeton review like columbia, it states the average at 3.78. Now if thats weighted, thats pretty low for columbia. It doesnt make sense if its weighted

The info. in Princeton Review is based on what the colleges give them. So, if not weighted, UVA's average gpa is 4.0. This is the highest of ANY university I know of. That would suggest everyone who gets accepted to UVA has a 4.0 (4.0 being a perfect non-weighted gpa). Since you can't have a 4.1 on a 4.0 scale - no one gets in with a 3.8?

You would think some of those athletes would bring down their average gpa as well.

i dont know then lol thats weird

most of princeton reviews statistics and rankings are useless. The statistics are notorious for being incorrect, and don't get me started on the rankings. Don't worry about the GPA, I would go by how many incoming first years are in the top 10% of their class, and that is around 87% I believe. Probably 99% for OOSer's.

Uva is also dedicated in aiding those who come from disadvantaged or diverse backgrounds to come into the university, so that also affects the overall GPA amount.

An avg. 4.0 gpa doesn't reflect disadvantaged backgrounds. Since you are a student there, is the 4.0 weighted or not?

There's no way everyone who is admitted to UVA has a 4.0 unweighted GPA

yea thats what i was thinking. The URMs have like 100% in if they get a 3.3GPA and 1100+ SAT

Hey, I am a URM - according to some other cc members! Because I am of hispanic descent, seems I'm "legally" entitled to declare so. But I want to get accepted based on my own creditionals not because my grandmother is 1/2 Mexican. I have also recently found some scholarhsips I am entitled to. Am I applying? No -- that's not fair.

hey Im not discarding URMs, by all means if u wanna go to UVA do whatever u can to get in! Its just, Im Asian and once was considered URM but now im basically white. Getting in based on ur own credentials is great, but u got that hook that I dont and if i were u, I would deffinatley use it.

I don't think it's morally right. Regardless of my 'heritage', I was born and raised in the U.S., as was my mum and I've never been discrimated against or anything. No one would ever mistake me for being Hispanic. The fact that I've lived, taught and studied in Central America will offer more diversity than being merely 1/8 Mexican.

That's a good attitude to have, worldshopper.

Average high school GPA is the most BS'd number that colleges put out. Although the average high school GPA for UVA students is certainly very high - probably in the 3.8+ range - it certainly isn't 4.0. I have a feeling that they're mixing unweighted and weighted GPAs, which invalidates the number. Hell, including weighted GPAs all immediately invalidates the average, since weighting systems vary by school.

If you're a prospective applicant, you should know that CLASS RANK and GPA go hand-in-hand, and you should be concerned about your rank. If you're top 5%, you're fine. If you're barely top 15%, have fun at JMU.

I'm in top 5%, but barely. FYI - my weighted gpa is 4.5 only because I've taken all honors/IB classes since Day 1.

I won't be having fun at JMU 'cause I didn't apply. It's more like I'll be having fun at community college. Just kidding. Actually my real safety is University of Richmond.

i respect ur opinion worldshopper.

JMU and GMU haha cav

my sisters who both attended UVA said that JMU stands for Just Missed UVA and GMU stands for Greatly Missed UVA. No offense to GMU students and JMU students, I just thot it was quite funny!

Btw, is UVA's mid year report just self-reporting?? If it is, I guess the Honor code is quite serious

The Honor Code is quite serious. If you faked your midyear report, I have no doubt that they'd pull the carpet out from under you and take away your acceptance.

Yea, if they figure you are cheating trying to get in to UVA, you are mostly likely to cheat while you are there.
