Average SAT Scores

The average SAT score in 2010 was 1509 for all three sections of the exam. By section, the average score was 516 (M), 501 (CR) and 492 (W).

Not all high school students take standardized tests, of course. In our high school about 75% of the students take the SAT or ACT. Then there are those states where the overwhelming number of students take the ACT rather than the SAT.

If the SAT was ever made mandatory for all students nationwide, however, I was curious as to what CCers think the average score would most likely be. Do we have any data from states that do make the SAT (or ACT) mandatory that could be useful in developing a reasonably educated guess?

In Colorado, the average ACT score for juniors dropped from 21.5 to 18.6 when the ACT test became mandatory (in 2000). Before the change, about 63% of juniors took the test.

Thanks for that information fignewton. That sort of drop corresponds to a decline in the average SAT score of 1500 to 1320 if I am reading my concordance tables properly. That is a fairly significant decline. I know there are other states that have made the ACT or SAT mandatory and would be interested in what their experience has been?
