Awards

When I see people post their stats, I always see like 20 different awards. I don’t think I have any. Do you guys know any well known state or national competitions that I could enter as a junior. I am interested in Math and hope to major in finance. thx

if you list 20 different awards in ten different fields in rather unimportant competitions or whatever it is not going to impress the adcom; but couple awards on some great comp will be more imressive. Remember colleges look for depth not bredth

what are the "great comps" in business? or math. I got a 6 on the AIME and 115 on the AMC12, does that count?

I cant help u on that one cause i am not from States so i am not that familiar with US cometitions; but if it is competitive and on national level than it is good i guess

Most definitely report AMC and AIME. I did and I know a lot of kids who score high on the AMC and report it. It shows that you are able to think outside of the box in Math, a normally in the box subject.

I don't think it qualifies as an "award" though. The only well-known math/science competition that I'm aware of is the Intel research thing, but I'm not ready to commit so much time. So i was wondering if there's a lesser stressful competition

yes, you've pretty much missed the boat for this year. This is a good time to start planning for next year. If you are an awesome programmer, an exception would be the USA Computing Olympiad. Although most people compete all year, there was someone two years ago who found out about the competition around this time. He was able to do well enough on the final competition, the US Open, to get invited to the training camp. From there he got selected for the US team to to the int'l competition. www.usaco.org
