I dont think ill make a huge difference whether you take it over the summer or main year. If anything, it easier over the summer since thats your only class you have to focus on. I felt 1A and 1B was much easier. No final or discussions. The class is a easy B, hard A. Worst case, i dont think 1 B will hold you back too bad with many more classes to come.

Most people arent able to complete their entire english sequence their freshmen year. Mainly cause 1C has limited availability and mostly seniors get it. So even if you passed the awpe and take 1A and 1B in your fall and winter quarter, you most likely cant get 1C in the spring. Whiles you can take 04, 1A, 1B, in your fall, winter, and spring quarter. So by years end, your in the same english standing as everyone else.

If all u have to focus on during the summer is english then that is indeed a great plus.

However, Im not sure if im getting this right, but you felt that 1a and 1b were easier compared to 004 engish over the summer?

was this because it was done during the main year or was it because of the preparation and study done at summer bridge.

Edit: oh also in one of ur previous posts you said that during the main year to move onto 1a u need to pass the final and the class. but to 1a to 1b there is no final or even discussions?

@rickster: yeahh i saw their website too, & my family is low income too, so i’m very glad room & board are covered (including food!! lol) however, in their summer bridge website it also says that students are only responsible for their own textbooks??!! i wonder if they’re going to be expensive or something? :/

Yes i felt 1A and 1B were easier. Mainly because there were NO final (maybe a take home essay), midterms, or discussions. Also, English 4 kinda taught me what professors look for in a essay. And my professors graded easier. English 4 professors tend to grade very tough.

English 4 is the only english class (unless you take some upper division class) that has a discussion.

does 004 english over the year have a final? if not, i probably will just do it over the year and that being said, i hope its easier that if i were to do summer bridge.

English 4 has a final in the main year and summer. Its the same format as the awpe. Ive had friends who failed the final (i think you need like a 73+/100) over the main year and had to retake…

If you take english 4 in summer, you get to choose the professor as well (ratemyprofessor.com). So choose wisely. But if you take it in the main year and register during orientation, the professor names are not available.

thank you so much for your insight. It really helped me decide on what to do. As of right now, im pretty sure im going to go ahead and do summer bridge

I took the AP Lang. and got a score of 3 (aha, pathetic…at least I got waived from taking the actual placement exam). I also took the AP Lit. exam but have yet to find out my score. If I do score with a 3 or higher, what will this place me for English in the Fall?

^ actually i think you’ll get placed in English 1B since you got a 3. If you get a 4 or 5 on Lit. then you will get placed in 1C and if you’re in BCOE, you can get credit for 1C through another engineering class you have to take anyways so you’d be basically done with English.

SO, If I pass the AP Lit exam, I will get placed in Eng 1B and then I’d have to complete that and 1C? And then be done?(this is informal, so don’t say anything about my grammar)

No matter what you’ll be placed in 1B since you got a 3 on an English ap test(Unless you choose to go into 1A), but if you get a 4 or 5 on you AP Lit then you will be placed in 1C.

Unfortunately, I’ve also been placed in ENGL 004. I plan to satisfy the ELWR in the second summer session, and I’ve learned that there are two ways to satisfy it. There’s the Summer Bridge/non-Summer Bridge program, and the other is a “new hybrid computer-assisted course”: English Writing 4E ([English Writing 4e: Home](http://english4e.ucr.edu/)). Basically you “do half the live classwork at home, and the other half on campus one day a week.” I’ve decided to go with the new hybrid computer-assisted method, and I was wondering if anyone else is going to go with this method.

Also, how’s the workload during the summer? Does it vary from instructor to instructor?

Off topic: My final high school transcript was sent out during the second or early in the third week of June, and it seems that UCR hasn’t received it yet. I know that UCR receives buckets of official documents daily, but has anyone had UCR receive your high school transcript yet?

@jlim93, YES! UCR has yet to receive my transcript but I do not know whether that is my school’s fault or UCR. I guess we will see what happens before July 15 :|
