So I'm placed in English 004, and there is no way I can take the summer course to fulfill that requirement before fall quarter. I know I'm not that great at writing essays, and just writing in general. How will that effect me during my first quarter? Like for papers and other stuff from my other classes? I want to keep a high GPA, also I'm an engineering major...is there a lot of papers/essays? Thanks everyone!!!!

It really isn’t a big deal at all. It’s kind of a remedial course, I think(?). I believe it’s designed for students to have a better understanding of essay structures. Grammar is also very important.

It’s just one of your breadth courses. I assure you it will not affect your life here in Riverside at all.

Have you read about the Summer Bridge Program at UCR. Enrolling in it will fulfill the English requirement, for the fall. I tried fulfilling the requirement at my local community college, but its to late.

Basically your going to wind up wasting time .
Plus if your writing isn’t up to par your going to have some trouble with your other classes .
95% of college is just writing ,( the other 5% is math) .
Don’t take too many classes that are writing intense( like history or poli sci) until you pass Eng 001A( might not be the exact course name). I’ve had poli sci teachers warn the entire class the first day that if your writing/reading isn’t up to snuff, don’t take his class .

Im in engineering, is there still a lot of writing? And some questions from my original post still haven’t been answered yet…

There’s not a lot of writing in engineering, but a lot of the elective classes/breadth classes that you’re required to take may be writing-intensive. Have you gotten an offer for English-1PA? If you get it, it’s a program that lets you take a variation of English 1A…if you pass it, you move to 1B, but if you fail it, you’d have to go back to English 4. Otherwise, there’s no other way to get to English 1A by fall rather than summer school or AP test scores. TBH, it’s not going to affect you that much, as long as you apply what you learn quickly. Your first quarter, there’s probably only going to be essays and papers in your English class, don’t stress too much.
