I emailed my admissions counselor last Wednesday and received an automated response minutes later:

“Thank you for your email and your interest in Duke University. During the months of January and February, I will be reading applications from home and responding to emails infrequently.”

I wait two days before faxing my application updates to the admissions office like it says on the FAQs section of the Duke Admissions website. If what you had to say to your counselor was really important, then call the admissions office directly.

When you get hundreds of e-mails a day and have to evaluate hundreds of applicants on top of that, it’s hard to respond to everybody via e-mail. I would not take it as a bad sign that you didn’t get a response from that particular individual. I wouldn’t read anything into it whatsoever. If you have something important to relay, call the admissions office. Good luck.

Duke’s Admission Office prefers communication via phone instead of via email. If the counselor does not respond in a few days (4-5 days), I suggest calling him or her during business hours. Their numbers are on the Duke Admissions website.
