I got a B in algebra 2 as my final grade in my sophmore year. How will this affect my chances of getting into a tech school like CMU or RPI. Its mostly because i didnt do my homework on time and a lack of care. I just took the Math I and I have a 750. If I get a 730+ on Math II, would it make up for it?

It is not ideal based on the colleges you are looking at, but it in no way will kill your chances. Become more motivated/do your homework and start getting As in math.

was it honors algebra 2 or regular?
it will definitely hurt, but if you get A’s in the rest of your math classes I think it can be somewhat overlooked. ALso, 730 is not that great of a score on the Math II. You should be aiming for AT MINIMUM a 790 on MLII for those schools to make up for the algebra II grade.

It won’t hurt that much. Just stick to it and there are way too many more factors colleges look at that than one grade sophmore year.

Give up on high school and become a professional balloonist.

I got a B in algebra II…who cares. It’s a B, not the end of the world. Just try to do better in future math classes where time and effort are required.

I got a 100 and a 99 on my first and second marking period, respectively. Just self-study and you’ll find the class really easy.

What will hurt more is taking Alg II in 10th grade. Most high achievers would have taken in by 9th at the latest.

^
The average math sequence is something like Algebra 1 > Geometry > Algebra II > Trig/Pre-Calc/Stats/nothing.
The advanced sequence at most schools puts Algebra II in 10th grade. At my school you have to get special permission and test out of stuff even to take calculus before senior year.

I’m in eleventh and taking Algebra 2. My elementary school didn’t offer an advanced sequence, and while my high school does, it wasn’t worth it for me to make up that year. I’m planning to probably take precalc senior year.

It guess it depends on what you will do in college
If it’s math related, then it might not look too good - but not sure why you would do something math related if the reason you didn’t do well is “lack of care”

I am just saying that at my school the progression is:
Alg I in 7th, Geo in 8th, Ag II 9th, AP Stat/Pre Calc in 10th, Calc AB or BC in 11th, Vector Calc in 12th., if BC in 11th.

Goodgig, colleges will take in account your school’s particular available classes per grade.

@goodgig: Your school’s math sequence is rare, especially in schools in the south/midwest where I’d estimate that <2% of schools allow you to advance that early. By no means whatsoever is taking Algebra 2 in 10th grade bad if that’s all that the school offers.

Also, to the OP: a B is of course not desirable but it won’t kill you. There are plenty of unhooked kids who have gone to Ivy League and equivalent schools with several B’s as long as you don’t make it a habit and have the test scores and EC’s to back you up.

I got a C+ in calc AB and I still got into rpi. Just score higher in the next math class

Thank you for you replies. I am taking Calc BC in my senior year and will be trying my best to get 800s on the math subject tests. Upward trend is always better right? Also, I truly discovered I want to be an Engineer this year, Ive always been interested in Science and such. I just didnt care about school too much, which lead me to have several Bs. I am trying my hardest to be the best I can be in my Junior year and raise my test grades.

Also you math sat and stuff don’t have to be crazy. I got a 32 in math on the act and a 690 on math 2 it doesn’t really matter

I think you will be fine if you do well on sat tests.
But the thing is, taking alge 2 seems a bit late in my opinion.
You should skip pre-calc in summer, because pre-calc basically like an honors algebra 2.
