Will it matter to colleges if I get a 'B' in an elective course senior year? The other 4 classes I'm taking are 4 APs, and I'm expecting 3 As and maybe 1 B+ if I'm unlucky. Will my 'B' in the elective course have a large negative impact on my chances? The reason I'm asking this is that I find my elective course a complete bore (it's filled with annoying freshmen, and my mom refuses to let me drop it), so I just do college apps every class. I might end with B this marking period, and I'm probably going to be too lazy to actually work hard in my class to get a 100, so I'll most likely end with a B.

Also, tomorrow is the last day that I can drop the elective course without it appearing on my transcript. I asked my mom to let me drop it, but she thinks that its "my only opportunity to learn a lot" (even though everything's learned STRAIGHT from the textbook). Plus, she thinks that I'm degrading myself by being a "quitter." What are some good arguments to convince her to let me drop?

You could tell her you want to focus on your other classes/college apps since they’re more important…and that the elective is just a waste of time and you don’t learn as much as she thinks you do.

Ok I have no hope of convincing her, since this is the last day to drop the class without it appearing on my transcript. I’ll probably end with a B+ or an A-, depending on my luck. If I end up with a B+, will it seem like I’m lazy, since elective classes are supposed to be easy? If I get all As or 3 As/1 B+ in my AP classes, will it raise a red flag because I got As in AP classes but not in an elective class? God I’m worrying too much T_T

I chatted with admissions reps for a UC (I don’t remember which), and she said that fall grades don’t even count towards admissions x) This may vary between colleges, so check in case. They do consider the rigor, though, of your senior year. UC Berkeley (I remember now) said (on CollegeWeekLive) that you should still shoot for A’s for rescinding purposes, but that fall grades aren’t a part of the evaluation.

Dude, no offense, but they’re your grades - not your mom’s. If you think you really can’t pull off an A, and that it’s going to affect your chances, just drop the course and deal with your mom later. While this is not something I would do (but I have never been in your situation, so I wouldn’t know how it would feel), just think about it - if they do look at those grades, as rush10 says, these B’s would make a difference for top universities…and is it really that hard to put in the effort now that you’ve come so far? I mean, you’ve spent the last 4 years working, only to get * lazy * and drop the ball now?

i got a B in a drama class that i didnt even need to take freshman year… i already have fine arts credit frm other classes. will thsi hurt my chances at colleges?
