B in physics- a deal breaker?

Hey guys, I'm thinking about applying to CalTech regular. I know that CalTech puts a strong emphasis on physics so I was wondering if my B in physics would be detrimental. I am interested in biology, and all my other stuff are pretty good. Would this decrease my chances a lot?

then apply saying that you’re interested in bio. downplay physics.

B in physics will def not be a dealbreaker though, although it will be relatively more detrimental since this is Caltech rather than, say, HPYSM.

Please please please don’t fret over one B. Been there, done that.

It is true that when faced with two similar applicants in all other aspects, a college will most likely choose the person who has a better _______ (in your case GPA), but I highly doubt that even a school like Caltech would look at an application and be like, “Oh, this person got one B in physics. They must be really dumb. Let’s reject them!”

Thank you for your replies! I have a decent number of bio and math accomplishments and really like CalTech, so I hope my one B in physics won’t hurt me tooo much :)

I’m still ranked 3rd in my class out of 500 people, so I hope that will kind of cover up my one B.

Out of curiosity, is this B for first semester this year or in years past?

It was the second semester of junior year.

k yea that shouldn’t matter too much given that you got an A in 1st semester and straight A’s senior year 1st semester.

I’m happy to hear that! CalTech and MIT are my top choices, so i was a bit worried

if your high school physics got a B, how to survive at Caltech and MIT even accepted. Think about how much you like physics. if not, think over.

Unless Caltech admissions has changed a lot in the past 5 years, a “B” in physics would indeed be a dealbreaker. That is true no matter how advanced or rigorous the class.

guess im not getting into caltech… :(

Apply anyway and see what happens!

As the Spanish saying goes:
<<quien no="" arriesga="" cruza="" la="" mar.="">></quien>

If you are 3rd out of 500 and solid otherwise, I wouldn’t let one “B” stop you - even if it is in physics.

When you are an adult, you will regret what you never attempted more than that which you attempted and failed.

Please see this thread for a description of Caltech admissions. It is 6 years old, but as far as I know nothing has changed

^And also read the second-to-last paragraph about applying anyway if you really want to.
