I am a current purdue engineering student, so I can tell you a little bit about it. Purdue has a very good engineering program, it is always ranked in top ten, aeronautical/astro and industrial engineering are always in the top four. The classes are pretty hard here but the professors are willing to help and work with you. Also you have many help resources such as supplemental instruction, free tutoring etc. Also it is pretty cheap compared to other schools of its caliber such Illinois, Michigan and CMU. The engineering department is growing and many new buildings are being built and new faculty hired. Purdue also has an excellent co-op program and many companies attend in the fall to recruit interns and full time. It has the largest run student job fair with close to 170 companies in attendance. Also if you are interested in undergrad research, many opportunities are aviable. So if you want a good education without emptying your bank account, come to purdue

I'd say in terms of science, Irvine beats Davis.

Purdue beats USC in engineering.
UCI is tied with UCD in engineering.
