BA (not BFA) in MT, Help choosing a university?

Hello, So here's my (short) story. Im 13, but I'm in grade 10 (Sophmore) and I'm from Canada.. AND I'm home schooled. I realize that making it in this business isn't the easiest thing to do, but I'm ready to work, and make sacrifices :) So currently I'm going to graduate when I'm 15. now that's really quite young so Im planning to do an extra year of school to save money, and make my transcript and resume look a little more impressive.

I've been taking acting lessons since I was 10, and singing lessons since I was 11. I've done 8 or so performing arts summer camps, and I've never gotten a lead acting role but I usally get singing solos even in the plays at my theatre school. I've gotten into the Advanced Company at my theatre school once (auditions the end of may so hopefully it will be twice soon!). I took 6 years of Irish Clog dancing hangs head in shame but I know really random and unique talents are good for your resume.

I know I'm young to be looking for colleges and stuff but it's something that really interests me. Musical Theatre is my passion but I know a fall back is really necessary when going for an arts degree. My current plan is to get a B.A. in MT and move to NYC, see how things go for a few years and if nothing seems to be working for me,then get a B.Ed. and become an acting teacher (at a theatre school, like where kids go for once a week classes) or an English teacher for children. (grade k-4) but still do auditions and everything.

So which colleges/universitys would be my best options education wise, but are also "cost effective"? I can't spend more then 25k a year unless I get A LOT of scholarships.
Thanks in advance for your help! :)

Dear Only,

Congratulations on thinking about all of this so far ahead of time. When the time comes to apply you will really know what you are doing! I would recommend that you go the the main MT page and look towards the top of the thread listing. You will find a thread called the Big List. It lists most of the schools with MT programs, how hard they are to get into and what type of degree they give. Although many schools that give a BFA also give a BA also. Once you see some schools that look good to you then go the those schools websites to learn more. Then come back here to ask more specific questions about schools. Also I hate to inform you, but it may be hard to find such a program for less that 25K. But there may be helpful information regarding that here as well. Good Luck!

Why would you be ashamed of Irish Dancing??? My son is a championship Irish Dancer and that experience has served him VERY well. His ID experience has given him many unique opprtunities including competitions in Ireland and all over North America and an opportunity to perform at our states govenour’s innaugeration celebration. He was able to use his dance skills at most of his BFA college auditions. Many of the auditors saw it listed on his resume and asked him if he could do a few steps. He does not compete anymore and will perform now only when paid :), and believe it or not he does get paid. I would definately list it on your resume. ID is an experience all in it’s own - and if you are an Irish Dancer you know exactly what I mean  .
