BA Theatre

Hi.
I am currently a junior in high school. For years, I was sure that I wanted a BFA in musical theatre and that I wanted to have a Broadway career. Recently, I have discovered that this is not the case anymore. I really enjoy straight acting as well, directing, costume design, marketing, and would love to teach theatre or run my own theatre.

I am now starting to look at schools with a BA in theatre that allow a double major with Business, Marketing, Arts Management or something similar. I also want the school to allow me to take dance classes and private voice lessons. I have taken dance for 12 years and am not ready to give it up and I believe voice lessons are a crucial component for an actor's versatility.

I think I want a teaching degree (for high schools) as well and possibly a minor in dance. I know I wont be able to do these and a double major but I am going to try for as many as possible...

I attend a prestigious private high school but am in the bottom half of my class academicaly there. I have grades in the B+/A range this year but sophomore and freshman year many of my grades were Bs. I do not take the most challenging courses offered and will most likely graduate with only one AP (statistics). Many students at our school attend Ivies and other very selective schools. It is not an arts school but I am heavily involved in the arts program.

For schools, I would rather there not be a BFA musical theatre or theatre program to avoid more competition and I will consider a MT concentration.

Any suggestions on schools? (I have read this and the MT forum)

Thank you!
Tiffany
(Sorry for the long post)

I PMd you.

Tiffany,

You might want to consider IU. Here you can get a BA with a Secondary Teaching Certification:

BA Course Offerings

You can also pursue a BA with emphasis in Stage Management:

Academic Programs

IU has a wonderful acting department and you can take voice lessons from the renown Jacob's School of Music as well as dance.

I think in the past applicants have had an avg ACT of 27 but with increased applications there is rumor that admissions have become tougher. So work on that GPA and test scores and apply early when the time comes. IU admits on a rolling basis so apply as early as possible. Best of luck to you

Tiffany,

I agree, IU sounds perfect for you. I am currently a BA in Drama. I am trying out for the MT program this year, because MT is something in my soul that has to be expressed. If I get into the MT program, though, I know I'll have a 5 year plan, because I can learn so much about stagecraft, and script and screenwriting I will want to take those courses, too. Also, I am well on my way to a minor in dance, which has a couple more courses than the MT kids have, so I'll finish that, too.
