Erghhhhhhh. I feel so down... so, this is my first time taking the SAT...but i spent SO MANY hours on SAT prep..ugh..and yeah so I get a 1850..
CR:600/Math:600/Writing:600 essay:10.. To me.. this seems lame....pretty average. :(.

In junior year, i have a 4.7 GPA, 4.13 cumulative...
Do you think these scores r gonna hurt my chances in Berkeley or Stanford?

Well, the SAT is a standard platform that colleges use since there's no other way of determining what the "GPA" at one school is like compared to other standards at other schools (e.g. I could have a 4.7 GPA and a 1850 but if another kid has a 1900 and a GPA of only 4.0 then obviously the rigor of the educational systems differ).

I disagree to some extent to that reply. If high GPAs, low SATs were a trend across an entire school (or at least in many cases), then the classes are probably not very rigorous. However, you can't just compare one person's scores & GPA since some people are just bad test-takers in general.

To the OP: I would suggest taking it again if your goal is Berkeley/Stanford (you're a junior, right?). If you take some practice tests in the meantime, you might be able to help your score.

To be blunt, yes, they will probably hurt your chances .. IF you don't take them again!

Seriously, SAT scores only improve with time (at least in most cases I've heard of). If you're a junior, take an SAT in your senior year.. October would be a good time. My scores jumped significantly when I took it a second time and I didn't even study much for it.

I'm in the same position as you... even worse!!! I got 1800 composite (650 math/490CR/660w) and I also want to go to really competitive schools: Ivy Leagues, MIT, CIT, Stanford etc. However, I'm not giving up!! I'll take the SATI again next year and I'll hope for better grades.

P.S.- My really low CR score is due to the fact that I'm international... If I'd live in the US I'm sure I'd get a higher grade!! That's so unfair!!! Do you think it is possible to raise my math and writing scores to about 750 and try for a 600 in CR?

Math and writing are highly coachable, coolgirlie, so yes, you can potentially get 750s in math/writing. It's going to require some serious study (I'm learning calculus 3/linear algebra but since I didn't study/practice too much for the math section I only got a 710 :()

ok...let me be completely straightforward with u...take no offense...the word i would use to describe ur chances of Berkely or Stanford AT THIS STAGE is most prolly....BLECH...

I mean, I dont kno u or anything u do outside of school, but i kno ppl with 4.0s (unwieghted) and over 2300s that got rejected from stanford...

BUT I do kno others who had avg GPAs and OK scores that go in becuz of some kick-ass activity or outside proogram...

One thing is for sure...TAKE THE TEST AGAIN...
and u must write an AWESOME essay

RETAKE! okay just try harder. its only your first time. dont feel bumbed out. just take a bunch of practice tests and realize that by you studying, you will get into the college of your dream. play some motivational music before you take the test and read, write, and do math problems a lot. that will get you aroudn 2000+

As someone else on this post has said, Math and Writing are highly coachable. For the Critical Reading section, don't worry too much about your vocabulary unless you feel like your vocabulary is really weak (like, there are four or five questions per Sentence Completion section that contain words you don't know). Instead, read a ton of books.

Don't despair! I've seen a ton of students with scores like yours raise them significantly in six months. And think of it this way: much, much better to have high grades and middling scores, than high scores and middling grades. After all, you can still have a big influence on your test scores, but your 9-11 grades are nearly a done deal. . . and you've aced that most-important part of the college process.

haha, THANKS GUYS!!
yes, I hear all of you out there..I agree with you tho, I dont think I can get into stanford with these scores.. soo yeah I'm RETAKING IT...in June..do u think it'll give me enough time to prep?
Yeah, I'm jus gonna practice more and more with the reading n math sections. I'm alright with the essay score, cuz it is tough to get a 6. i'll still try harder tho lol. vocab, you have no idea how many hours iv spent in memorizing 2000 sat words..heh kk..n i think i need more practice in math.
k thanks to all, keep posting if you have anything extra to say =)
