Babson College vs. University of Pennsylvania

I am a High School sophmore (its summer now, sophmore in school yar 10-11) in the Dominican Republic, my cummulitive GPA is 3.5 (weighted), whould you say I have a better chance at Babson or U Penn. I am very determined, I havn't taken the SAT's yet. I am in business club, enviormental club, Dom. His. and geo club, and reachouts (teaches kids t read.) I am currently ranked #5 junior squash player in the DR. I am going to take my first AP this year (AP world.) Which B School should I foucus on? BTW, I am planning on taking AP Microecon, AP STATS, AP AB Cal, AP US, AP world, AP Span lang, and AP english lang. I am going to a summer program next year, and doing an internship in a local bank.

******* WHAT ARE MY CHANCES?

Don’t go to Babson…even if you couldnt get into Wharton…dont go to Babson.

why not babson? It has a preety high rank.

^lol wut…how many people do you think have even heard of babson

any1 who knows anything about business. What other college do u think is good?

any1 who knows abot business. Whats ur opinion? Where else should i think of applying?

Babson is an excellent school for what it provides and to the niche it caters.

However, especially when it comes to business schools, Wharton is incomparably selective. Babson will almost certainly be a “better chance” for you.

What other business school should I consider?

You don’t have the highest GPA, but you seem to be going somewhere with some of your ECs, not all of them. Geometry club…really? Or does geo stand for geography? Then still…really?

Wharton still isn’t impossible, just work on your GPA. A 3.5 weighted isn’t Ivy League material.

But I do have a secret to share with you. It’s called affirmative action, and it will be your best friend (seeing as you’re most likely Hispanic, coming from the Dominican Republic and all). You won’t have to have as good a GPA, SAT or any other standardized test, well, because of your race. I’m not telling you to underachieve, and I’m not being racist-- I’m just informing you.

You may be right about AA helping him, but you are way off on the measure of impact AA has. Most AA recipients in the Ivy league are less than a hundred points off the average at most; many beat the average substantially. GPAs are almost identical - plenty of blacks score very well in high school, more than enough to fill the ivy league several times over. Affirmative Action or not, a 3.5 gpa is not getting you into any school at Penn or likely any ivy league school unless you bring something significant (sports, artistic ability, you’re father does God’s work) to the table.

Well, I actually made a thread about this…but there was a girl at my HS who got into Columbia ED with a 3.4 (she was just outside of the top 10% of our class). She also happened to be an African American. I also have a friend who got into Dartmouth ED. He was Native American and had a 24 on his ACT.

Babson makes sense if you want to start your own business. Otherwise, Georgetown’s McDonough, NYU’s Stern, UVA’s McIntire will give you better job placement.

@Money4Life Dartmouth was an institution whose original purpose was to educate Native Americans. Perhaps that’s why they look at him even more favorably than even a Black applicant, because he carries on a long tradition Native Americans at Dartmouth. Plus he applied ED to Dartmouth, which helps more than it can hurt.

^^^
Haha ya I have heard that about Dartmouth before. Still, I think it does a good job of underscoring the point I was trying to make which was AA isn’t some a small little “bump” factor…it (along with recruit status) can revive “dead” applicants.

Penn…Obviously…

3.5 weighted really isn’t going to cut it for you. I thought it said unweighted at first and that would have been very difficult already. Babson is great for entrepreneurship.

Wdixon11 please qualify your claims… Don’t make blanket statements without providing justification

It’s actually more than that. Look at the SAT averages here: [News: Testing for ‘Mismatch’ - Inside Higher Ed](http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2009/04/20/mismatch)

Also look at how much minority admissions would drop if there was no AA: <a href=“Ending affirmative action would devastate most minority college enrollment”>Ending affirmative action would devastate most minority college enrollment;

You’re right though that with a 3.5 weighted GPA there’s no way AA will be the needed boost.

while nothing can top penn/wharton for business education and opportunities, it may be a reach with those stats.
good colleges to consider are NYU stern, USC Marshall, and maybe some public school programs (UMich Ross, UC Berk Haas, UVA McIntire)

Very rare for anyone to have to choose between Babson and UPenn/Wharton. One is a good business school, the other is arguably the best in the world. If you can get into (and afford) Wharton, it’s a no brainer.

Babson’s direct competitors are Bentley and Bryant (The Three B’s). All similar size, similar caliber business schools in New England. For some reason, Bryant has no thread here on CC, but it’s an excellent business school (even better than Babson in some areas).
