I'm so confused right now.
Should I major in Accounting or Hotel administration/management?
I'm taking business classes right now and I'm probably gonna get an Associate in Business,
however, what program would be better?
I know that Accounting is something that you can make a whole bunch of money with, since you can become a CPA after several years and taking and passing the exam...
but what about Hotel administration? Could that be a good major as well?

I'm more interested in Hotel administration but I don't know enough about it to say that it's a better major than Accounting.
I'm afraid to major in Accounting, then lose my interest in it and think that it's too boring and then wishing I would have studied Hotel admin.
What good colleges are there for Hotel admin./management?
I heard a lot of good stuff about UNLV but that's it.

Many hospitality majors who attend Cornell end up on the corporate side at brand names companies working in finance/operations or investment banking. There is a huge leverage most people are not aware of if you attend the right school and major in hospitality.

Aside from that, accounting and hotel admin are completely different fields of work. Figure out what you want to do before just majoring in something.

If you end up choosing hospitality, decide on what you want to focus on. There are a lot of branches. You should also decide if you want to work in corporate or stay on site.

you also have the option of working in hotel accounting if you want to mix and match both.

I would agree with commentcomment. If you REALLY were interested in hospitality and wanted to work in a hotel, Hotel management might be preferable. However, accounting would offer bettter opportunities. Frankly, I don’t understand why anyone would want to work in hospitality.

Wow, thanks for all the input!
I know that Accounting is preferable but after doing research and learning more and more about it, and after reading your thread taxguy, I really can’t see myself doing accounting. I wanted to do accounting because it is an amazing major and has really a lot of opportunities, but I wouldn’t be happy with it.
Hotel management/admin. seemed like a perfect match for me, because I’m outgoing, speak four languages (Spanish, French, German and English) and two of them fluently (German and English) and I really can see myself working long shifts and still loving my job. It just is really appealing to me. I don’t want to work on the corporate site, no, the actual working in a hotel is what I was thinking about doing.
I really want to stay in the business field, so if you guys think that hotel admin. would not be a good idea and can think of other majors in the business sector that could be a great fit, I’m more than open to hear your opinions.

You can try shadowing a hotel manager for a day or just get an internship to see how the environment is for hotel. I would recommend you making some calls and checking your college alumni networks.

I wouldn’t recommend working in hospitality unless you are absolutely passionate about the industry. Most hotels are unionized and there are a lot of rules and regulations unlike the private sector. The salary is low compared to corporate accounting and your hours can be ridiculous.

Hotel management is big in certain areas (primarily resort areas or major convention/business areas).

However, the tourist/hotel industry is notoriously low paying. Be prepared to spend a very long time working from the bottom up before you land a decent job with decent pay.

I don’t think hotel admin is a crazy major. I think the 2 attract very different types. If you love to sit at a desk and crunch numbers, accounting is for you. If you want to use the languages and like to be around people, I’d go for hotel admin.

There is so much attention to safe/secure majors, but I worry about all the kids flocking to them who will never enjoy them. I’ve seen kids get great jobs out of UNLVs program. Your languages could land you a nice job with that degree.

You know, I think you should go for it.
I’m interested in the same major and I think that, if you have a passion for it, you will be good at it.
I have some very close friends who went to UNLV and got awesome jobs as well!
To me it seems that most people who answered to your thread majored in Accounting, not Hotel Admin., so you shouldn’t get discouraged because of their opinion.
I personally don’t know that any of my friends have low paid jobs, but I do know that they work on weekends and have some crazy shifts, however, they LOVE their job.
Do what you love and you will be successful at it.
Good luck!
