Back from Frosh-O

I think for the pep rally they wear other shirts besides the purple ones. For as much as they wore the Frosh-O shirts, wouldn't have been a bad idea to schedule in a little laundry time slot... Mine just started wearing other shirts by Sunday of last weekend. Of course, there is always Febreze...

They really do wear the game shirt to the game--so long as the student body has decided the design and slogan meet their standards. Two years ago, they didn't like the yellow shirt, so this huge "black market" of bootleg other yellow shirts sprung up. Those were the Charlie's Angels/Charlie's Army shirts, with the slogan "Putting the NASTY back in Dynasty". From what I understand, students like the color and graphics of this shirt, and are neutral enough on the slogan to keep wearing them. I think the slogan is cool, but what do I know compared to my 20 year-old son who thinks he embodies cool (even though any cool he has was a genetic pass-down ;))

I'd imagine things are hopping by now. My d is working the 10 till noon shift at Reckers--I bet it will be hopping!

KR... is the webcast on the website??

http://und.cstv.com/#00

Thats the link to the pep rally. Just go to live events and its the second video available. You need to create an account with cstv.. but its like 3 steps so it takes no time

Thanks for the link Tim. Do you now if they ever have a link to the 'Concert on the Steps'? We have a freshman in band and would love to see that,

For what it's worth, as a student I thought Frosh-O was horrible. The mandatory parts were stuff everyone has heard before (including sometime earlier in the weekend), and many of the social activities were just awkward. I enjoyed going to band camp more than those activities when they conflicted, and band camp is supposed to be work.

Edit: Unfortunately with band camp I didn't see my parents much. Didn't really get to say goodbye to them, as I was running late to a practice when I finally left.

FROSH-O WAS AWESOME!!! it was supposed to be incredible awkward, that's what made it funny! it's basically one big joke and everyone knows it, but i definitely met a lot of girls i've been hanging out with lately at frosh-o and i got to know all the guys better... it was extremely awkward, but awkward is funny!

Hello everyone... As a parent of an incoming freshman and first and only child to attend college, as you can imagine I have millions of questions and would appreciate any input!!

My husband, son, and I are flying into SB on August 21, and my husband and I are coming home on August 25. (Staying at the Waterford Estates Lodge, never stayed there, but could not find anything else close to ND). Is this enough time, or should we plan on having our son there sooner?

Health insurance. What have most of you done about medical insurance. We are in Calif. and have an HMO, it covers him for emergencies out of state, but not for regular sick visits, etc.

Domer dollars. How much do most of you put on your child's card?

Work study. Does that earned money go into their student account or into the domer dollars?

Did any of you just purchase the sheet sets, etc. , offered by ND or did you bring them along on your flight?

For those living far away, how far in advance do you purchase flights to and from home?

How much stuff did you bring with you on flights or did you just purchase upon arrival in South Bend?

Laptop advice? Any advice here is appreciated.

Any other advice or pointers sure would be appreciated!!! Thank you!!

Hi New ND parent! I can try to answer some of your questions as I am the parent of a now JR (Fall '08) student.

I think that will be more than enough time to help your student get settled in. We are planning to move son back to ND (will be driving) and we have only planned a two night stay primarily because of the distance we are driving.

Keep your son on your medical insurance and make sure he has a copy of his insurance card with him. The Health Center covers sick visits, just not prescriptions that must be filled. They will bill you for this and you can file the info with your insurance. You might also want to consider a medical power of atty so that if the need arises, the Health Center personnel can discuss anything with you in the event of illness. Otherwise, they will not, including questions about bills (even tho you will be responsible for paying the bill!) A medical power of atty will insure this type of issue.

Domer Dollars--really depends on your student. You can always add more money via on-line charge if necessary.

Don't know about work study-anyone else?

Sheets-there are plenty of places around South Bend-Bed, bath and beyond, target, etc. that you can purchase sheets when you arrive if you will have access to a rental car.

Flights home--that depends! A lot of when we have purchased tickets home has been dependent on the cost of the ticket. We tend to start looking for tickets a couple of months out simply because of price. (Don't know if that is really going to matter this year because of gas prices!!!)

Laptop advice-our student seems to think that it is really personal preference. Maybe others could voice opinions--our student is an engineering major and says that most of the engineering majors have Windows PC.

Feel free to ask any other questions--I can tell you what I know based on our experience so far, but others may have better advice. Congrats!

Hi there,
Mother of upcoming ND Jr.

regarding your question
Did any of you just purchase the sheet sets, etc. , offered by ND or did you bring them along on your flight

I discovered a GREAT program offered by Bed, Bath and Beyond. Son and I went to local NJ BBandBeyond, and using a hand gun went around the store selecting the items he would need for dorm room.

BB and Beyond, actually sends our selections to South Bend store, where they had the items in a basket awaiting our arrival!!!
I was impressed, and sent corporate headquarters very positive reviews, because I seriously doubted they would actually be so efficient.

It was great, because your freshman will be involved in orientation events, (son loved it all), and it was very convenient to wander around the local store making these critical decisions.

And, BBand Beyond allows you to pay in South Bend, so you can make any changes and get charged Indiana sales tax, which beat NJ's :)
