Back from orientation session 101, any questions?

How much do you talk to your counselor? Do you get enough time with them to discuss with them one on one?

Yup, you spend a lot of time with your counselor and your orientation group. On the second day, you sign up for an academic meeting with your NSA for the afternoon and another meeting to talk about anything you’d like for the evening.

If our major is a science major and we take science classes for that major, does that apply to our major and GE or just our major?

Also do AP Credits satisfy GE?

Any class that’s a GE counts as a GE, no matter what other requirements it satisfies (so you should definitely aim for GE’s that count toward other things).

AP’s don’t satisfy GE’s.

Chemistry 20A and Math 31A both have the same final examination code, but on the layout of classes you should take each quarter on the UCLA website it recommends taking both in your 1st quarter. Because of the same final codes will I not be able to take them both in the fall??

Guys I’m really sorry if I’m being annoying but how is it that in chem20A out of 3 lectures 2 are already full (Enroll capacity is 29 and 29 have enrolled) and in the 3rd 15 are enrolled after only 1 orientation session? I thought the divide spaces equally in each orientation :s

Nvm that ^ I researched the class size and its capacity is almost 200 so I’m assuming it’ll reopen each session

Yea theres more open every session. Hahah during my sign up, within the first 5 minutes the session was filled, cause I was 106, but they opened another chem like 10 minutes after that haha ;]

Thanks  Also on the fb group everyone recommends you take a laptop, what did you guys use it for? Would an iPad suffice?

My advisor insists I take the placement exam although I have that 5 should I take it will.it hurt me in any way?

If we take classes such as Chem 20A and Physics 1A, should we take the lab courses that go along with it (20AL and 1AL) in the same quarter? If we do, does it count toward the 3 classes we are limited to during orientation sign up.

@abcd3f3 yes, if the final codes are the same, you will not be able to take them both in the fall. Your NSA will not allow you to enroll in any two classes that have the same final code. And yes, more classes will open up when it’s time to enroll during your orientation. Lastly, yes you should really bring a laptop. A ipad would do too if you don’t mind planning your classes on it. At first, I thought I was carry around my laptop for no reason but on the second day, it was veryyyy useful.

@tolucafan95, do you mean your NSA is insisting you to take the placement exam? I would say don’t do it. Not sure if it will hurt you or not but it’s a possibility. You already placed into math 31A/math 3A by getting a 5 on the AP calc AB test I’m assuming. A girl in my orientation group got a 5 also and she did not take the math placement test.

@japUCLA, the lab and lecture come together. You have to take both. It only counts as one class. So for example, if you take Physics (lab and lecture) and Chem (lab and lecture), that is only a total of 2 classes.

can someone provide a list of all available GE’s to take in the fall?

[UCLA Registrar’s Office: General Education Requirements](http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/ge/)

Here’s a good one too: [Schedule of Classes General Education (GE) Search](http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/schedule/gesearch.aspx)
You actually get to see the schedules and enrollment statuses as well.

@japUCLA: To clarify iequalstudent’s post, the chemistry lab (20L) has its corresponding lecture that you must attend as part of enrolling in the 20L class. For example, the 20L lecture could be on Tuesday while the lab portion is on Thursday.

Physics 4AL (the lab for people in the Physics 1 series), on the other hand, does not have a corresponding lecture.

If you enroll in a lab, the units DOES count against the 3 enrollment limit during orientation.

If you look at the registrar’s page for the lab classes, you will find that there are prerequisites. You will need to complete Chem 20A and Physics 1A before enrolling in Chem 20L and Physics 4AL, respectively.

But I think the 6 series and 14 series have built in labs

@abcd3f3: For chemistry 20A and math 31a, the two lectures that you happened to look at happened to have the same final. There’s more than one lecture and each lecture should have a different final time. (Typically, a class at 10AM MWF will have it’s final at the same time as other classes that are 10AM MWF).

@japUCLA: Lab classes that are separate (such as all chemistry labs, the 1 series physics labs) do not have to be taken at the same time as the actual course. Many people take this separately. For your first quarter, most people do not take any labs at all.

For those of you that are trying to enroll in classes after you return from orientation, your URSA ability to enroll should be blocked (or else you could just stalk the next session’s chemistry spots and enroll while they are enrolling during their actual orientation session). For me, they gave my specific UCLA account three hours on the third day (to correspond to your orientation session). Your enrollment ability should be unlocked on Sept. 18 (notice the note about anyone enrolling starting Sept. 18 that is shown all over the UCLA schedule of classes). The unlocking of enrollment MIGHT be a different date, but this is how my orientation worked last year.

She insists that it will only help me but I get the feeling if I take it I will only be allowed to take Math 31A and not 31B
