Back from Parents Week-end!

Wow, it great to hear the good stories about parents weekend and first liberty on their own. Unfortantly parents weekend was not as ood as we would have liked. Our plebe son has been working very, very hard in school and although he was thrilled to see us, his mind was on School, acceptance, and football since he is a starter his plebe year. He slacked a little in August when he could communicate with friends back home on IM, now he has straighten himself out but under alot of pressure in both the class and Football. By the time we left campus on Saturday all he wanted to do was find a place to have a good meal with his folks and watch some College football. We could not find any sports bars in the area so ended up at Friday's and had a great time. He slept until 10AM and FB players had to be back by 1PM for Practice on Sunday. We already had a flight out at 7PM so we didn't get much time on Sunday His friends parents took care of him after we left. Man has he matured in three months. He really wants liberty but had to travel with the team Saturday and is really looking forward to this coming weekend, he really needs a boost like the plebes recieved in Mahatten. Didn't get to meet many parents but hope to in the future.

jvcin--

My son also plays football, but lucky for him (I guess??) he does not start. I guess after this weekend he is happy about that. I was also upset about going back for football. I also heard some students had classes on Sunday night and some were not even there the whole weekend due to sports. I think if the school is going to make such a big deal about the weekend, then they should have liberty across the board and adjust the schedules accordingly. After all, it's one lousy weekend, and for you parents who come from far away it's difficult. I see, jvcin, this is your first post...believe me, we complain too!! It's not only the good you will see here, but also the not so good, the unhappy, but we are all in this boat (no pun intended) together. So welcome aboard!!

JVCIN ~ after the "high" of parents weekend, my plebe crashed low a few days later and really could have used the Manhatten boost like yours, but could not because of sailing. Apparently, the sailors rarely get to go into town....just peachy. But I do agree with your and kathynp - your criticism of parents weekend and not having the entire weekend is very legit. I am learning there are many rules/regulations/procedures I do not understand that don't seem to be fair at face value, but I am learning to trust the system... and in time it all comes together. I hope.

Parents! I feel a great need to send small, understanding cyber smiles across the web to you all this morning. Watching the kids take on some of the things KP puts on their plates is pretty much agony to witness sometimes. The ups go way up there but the downs most often hit the dirt. Parents can’t help but to be included on both rides. It gets a little frustrating as some of our well meaning advice can be mute as they are in a place we often times don’t understand. They sure do though. The Mids who post here are priceless in that they give us some insight.

You’ve a good support group here. I often take advantage of the wisdom of some on these boards. There is no other place like it. I use that little pm function to ask DD1, 8kidsmom, KP2001 & KPMom06, “What the @#$% now?!” and they spin a perspective for me to understand. My older son resents my saying that watching him go through civvy college was a breeze compared to this.

Advice for the day: Just keep communicating with each other to help your own sanity & when the sun sets tonight, know that your kid has made it through one more KP day & smile.

For the football parents: If you wanted your son to have the whole weekend then talk to the football coach. He's the one who put the practice on Sunday, not the command. I'm not sure why he decides to have practice on that day, seems to me like they would be just fine with one less day of practice for one week.

They should be glad they get liberty at all on the weekends. (Here comes a when I was a plebe...) When I was a plebe we didn't get liberty guaranteed until after recognition. We had to be given liberty by the midshipmen officers prior to that day and it rarely happened....I would say maybe three or four times.

I understand the frustration of not getting to see your kid the whole time, but believe me, in the end, being on a sports team gives one way more benefits than a few more hours with the parents on parents weekend (sorry guys, it's true)

By the way, the real name of parent's weekend is "Sister's weekend" but they can't really print that in the flyer's. :)

LOL!!!
"Sister's weekend" - the tradition continues.... P/C son was given the "unofficial" mission to make and display a banner announcing "SISTERS....", to be hung off O'Hara Hall facing the football field. Funny watching him quickly change from kakhis to shorts and sneakers 10 minutes b4 the parade on PPW because he had to climb up and fix the banner due to the high winds, then into whites in time for the parade..... banner mysteriously disappeared by the end of swearing-in?!?!?!

KP2001--I know it was the coach who had the practice and not the command, but why did they allow teachers who took off for Rosh Hashanna hold class on Sunday night? I think liberty is liberty, period.

Has there been any confirmation of the classes held Sunday night or is this just rumor? I'll hold comments until confirmed.

I drove a plebe back from the Andrew for class at 8pm.

kathynp how did your son get liberty for Saturday if he plays football?

not all the players travel to the away games.

The plebes still are not guaranteed liberty kp2001 until after recognition kp2001. They still give it out based on their "performance" for the week...
They'll get a decent amount of day liberty...i.e noon to 2200 or something like that. Overnight liberty probably won't happen again for awhile, especially if someone gets caught drinking. don't worry they'll go out more then 3-4 times.

Yea being on a sports team is good, I play a sport and plebe year I was friends with a bunch of upperclass who also happened have important reg positions (like the RTOA) you get away during the week, you act like a normal kid at practice, it's definetly better IMHO

That's right DG3--he doesn't travel--(and that week, he was sure happy about it!)
