Well, I just found out that I didn't get in to my dream school, Furman University, so its time for me to look at other options.

I think that I want to go to a smallish school with good liberal arts. I plan on majoring in history, but I'm not real sure what I want to with my life, so I would like to go to a school that is well rounded. I do not care so much for prestige, but I want to go to a college where I will receive a very good education. I want to go to a school where the students are serious about their work, but also know how to have fun. As far as location goes, I would like to stay fairly close to my home. I haven't really looked at many schools outside of NC/SC/VA, and I'm not sure if I would feel comfortable going further away than that. But really, I think I'd be willing to go a good distance if I found a school that I really liked.

Here's the kicker: the school has to have a lot of spirit and good sports teams. Sports are a huge part of my life, and I don't think I could go to a school that didn't care about athletics. And I definitely don't want to go to a college that doesn't have a football team.

Any ideas? I thought FU was a perfect match for me, but since those bastards won't let me in, I've got to go back to the drawing board.

I am not sure about the sports teams, but I have heard good things about University of Richmond. Also Sewanee, Rhodes, Millsaps are excellent and have school spirit. Sorry about Furman, but you'll find a great school. Karen

Before winter break starts, do talk to your counselor and have him call Furman and get some feedback as to why you may not have gotten accepted so that you can look at other colleges with that in mind. It may help you, especially if there is some outstanding issue you must deal with.

Have you looked at James Madison or Va Tech? The liberal arts, surprisingly, are pretty good at Tech. Students at JMU have fun, and they are enthusiastic about their teams. I know you will find a school that has what you want. Good luck in your search.

I'd echo what Pattykk said, those school seem to fit your academic profile, and as for sports, VT just won the ACC in football, and JMU is playing for the national championship in IAA football (they beat Furman in the 2nd round of the playoffs).

I found out from FU that I was actually only deferred, so I still have a chance at regular descision.

I have come up with a list of schools that I'll probably apply to as well. Right now I'm looking at Wofford, Elon, UNC-Asheville, UNC-Chapel Hill, Wake Forest, and James Madison. Carolina and Wake are pretty big reaches, but I'm confident about getting in to the other schools.

Know a 1st year girl on Sewanee's scccer team...she finds the academics a challenge, kids seem happy.....good atmosphere re: spirit. How about College of Charleston? Big on bball.
