Backing out of a College Accepetance?

I got accepted to a one of the universities that I applied to and I confirmed my acceptance...however, I also got accepted into another university and I've been having second thoughts about my first choice. How hard would it be for me to cancel my acceptance confirmation at this point (if the deadline is the 30th)?

Fax a letter.

But don't expect your deposit money back.

Yes, you can back out. You just lose your deposit. Let the college know ASAP that you're backing out. That may help someone on their waitlist.

I wouldn't back out until I had chosen the second school for sure. I don't think you want to back out, then try to re-accept your spot. That's a tough one...

Backing out is not a problem at all before May 1. If you call the admissions office, they will tell you who to contact. You will not be able to change your mind again, so think this through.

Also make sure to send your other deposit in by May 1.

Was your first choice committment a binding ED or any other kind of binding admission? If not, then the above advice is correct.

I know of several students who put their deposit on an RD acceptance, then got accepted off the waitlist of a higher choice school. They cancelled their first acceptance and paid the deposit to the dream school. And yes, you lose that first deposit.

I didn't have to make any deposit or anything like that. It was just an "accept" on a website.

You should be okay then if you didn't make a deposit. I would call, fax, or mail them a letter. Calling and faxing would be quicker. And isn't that how waitlist works? You say yes to one school and then if you get off the waitlist, you just lose whatever deposit you had with your original choice school?
