I sent in my deposit to one school, then changed my mind and committed at a different one. I know double depositing is a cardinal sin, so I'm sending an email to the first school immediately to let them know I will not be attending. What is the best way to word this email?

You don’t have to make it fancy in any way. be straightforward and say after doing more research, you found that you’d really love University B more than University A. Say you’re sorry you won’t be joining next year’s class, although you would have liked to, and thank them for everything.

Thanks so much!

Crap, I read another thread that says the only way you can cancel your enrollment at school A without getting both acceptances rescinded is to say you got in off the waitlist at School B… my situation was not a waitlist situation and I didn’t want to lie. I probably should have cancelled at School A the minute I enrolled at School B.

Should I be freaking out about this? Or is this just another one of those CC things where you end up panicking about something that you really don’t need to panic about?

Some things are best left unsaid. Send a brief and courteous not to School A to tell them you will not be attending as you though. They have more to do than worrying about your mistake. Move on - don’t complicate it all out of guilt.

Just tell school A you received a phone call that you were removed from the wait list of school B and have decided to take their offer. They are presently doing the same thing with their wait list prospects, so don’t lose any sleep over it.

The world does not read CC. If the original deposit you sent did not say anything about not depositing at another school, then it is not a big deal. You clearly had no idea. If you were never told this, then don’t worry. The main thing, though, is that you probably aren’t going to get your deposit back from school A because it is after May 1st. Also, I’d really make sure you are still “invited” to attend school B, as it is, again, after May 1st and they may have already begun to contact waitlisted students.

Good luck. Also, you don’t have to tell school A where you will be attending instead. It’s not any of their business.

I would write a nice email to school A to let them you have changed your mind and you will be attending school B. It is up to you if you want to tell them why. I wouldn’t lie about why you changed your mind. You never know, you may decide to go to school A later. You never know if school A rep is a friend with school B rep.

Don’t worry about this so much. Students do this every single year. Right up to the day that classes start at School A there will be students who change their mind. Some will be headed to schools B through Z, some will be headed into the Marine Corps, some will be headed to work.

Be polite.
Be succinct.

Send your deposit to School B, and make it very clear in all of your communication with School B that you will indeed be there this fall!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

And if they don’t quickly correspond stating their understanding of your acceptance, follow up quickly . Don’t be a CC horror story.
