At the risk of sounding (being) really, really, lame, what type of bag do MIT students use to carry their stuff from class to class during the day? I've seen a bunch of cute and cheap bags around lately, and I'm wondering what style (backpack, shoulder bag) and size is most practical (and um, considered cool?).

im an incoming frosh, but i bought a north face backpack. i think it's generally considered "cool"? haha. they're relatively expensive, but i bought mine 40% off.

oh on that matter, do lots of students wear north face winter jackets? =]

I'm also an incoming frosh so I don't really know, but I have a Timbuk2 messenger bag that I am in love with. They're kinda pricey though.

get the biggest heaviest one you can find.

pain = cool.

welcome to hell.

heh i got a $10 one from walmart. it's purple! :D i wanted a cheap one i could replace when i figured out what i needed.

i just bought a backpack/bag for the first time ;d
i forget what kind of backpack it is exactly, but whatever it is it's cool

Does anyone have to bring laptop every day to his/her class?

that would seem rather unreasonable, no? Especially given that if you need a computer, there are no shortage of athena machines all over the place.

I am sponsoring a new class, 19.001. We meet at the gap through the train tracks by the water purification factory between stata and technology square. Class starts promptly at 1:00 AM. You are required to bring your laptops on the first day and tell nobody you are coming

Some people bring their laptops every day -- it certainly makes class more entertaining, ahem. And at midday in the most popular clusters (56, 12, quickstation 11), there most certainly is a shortage of Athena machines, because they took out like 10% of the total machines on campus to make room for lame stuff like that printable markerboard in 56.

On the same note, about how much stuff would we carry to class everyday? I have already bought a messenger bag that would fit my laptop nicely as well as several notebooks/binders (more than one textbook is probably out of the question). Should I be considering buying a bigger one?

sorry River Phoenix, but I think that course number is already taken.

I don't ever take textbooks to class, and I'm not sure why you'd need to, unless you were planning on psetting during the day.

how safe is it to leave your laptop in your room, if you aren't planning to bring it to class? Do most people use laptop locks (are the desks at MIT workable for locks)? I'm wondering because several of my friends at other schools bring their laptops to class for the sole reason that otherwise it would get stolen..

messenger bags are the best. forget backpacks! haha.

^ are you serious? w/ a laptop in it + text books and all, it seems like it could hurt the shoulder a lot. No messenger bag for bicycle users, right?

yea, don't get a messenger bag if you're riding a bicycle.

I got a messenger bag, but I'm not planning on putting textbooks in it. I've never really taken a book to class since freshman year in HS. Anyways, the bag cost way more than a stupid bag made of fabric should, but whatever, it was a graduation present.

As far as laptops are concerned, I got a nice Ogio backpack 2 years ago that had compartments for a laptop and the necessary accessories. They look a lot better than normal "laptop backpacks" and they're terrific backpacks in their own right as well. I have a fairly light laptop, so carrying that around with a few notebooks and maybe one textbook was very easy, and having my laptop with me was extremely convenient too.

I got a backpack and it's the best decision I've ever made. You might check out the Targus Port 3.1 it's awesome ;)
