Backpacking and registering for classes

Does anyone know when backpacking and registration for classes starts? I noticed the schedule is on there now, but it won't let me backpack yet.

Also, anyone know how to tell when someone can register?

It’s in April, like the 2nd week or near then.

Cool, thanks.

What exactly is backpacking?

Saving the list of classes you want, so when you can register you simply hit register.

So, I just wanted to make sure. I shouldn’t be able to backpack yet?

If you’re an incoming freshman, they don’t allow you to even backpack until they unlock your file at orientation, meaning, if I recall correctly, there will be tons of kids with their desired course numbers scrawled on pieces of paper rushing to enroll when the time comes.

If you’re a current student, than yeah I’m pretty sure backpacking opens up sometime in late March or early April, usually about a week or so before the students with highest priority can enroll in classes.

I backpacked over a month ahead of my orientation?

I know I got an email saying March 24 but maybe that was just for spring/summer.

Can’t register til the beginning of April - as far as backpacking goes, a school-wide email will be sent out letting you know it’s available as we approach April.

should I backpack before orientation? or wait?

“should I backpack before orientation? or wait?”

You can’t. Though you can take a look at what classes you want to take.

Thanks guys.

wait but whats the difference between registering and backpacking classes?

And I assume CoE majors can’t really choose classes for their first year since everyone will have to take calc, physics, chem, eng100…

^Pretty much…

By the way, they’ll tell you to not take both chem and physics. If you think you can do it, ignore them (but then keep in mind that there’s a lot of work, and labs are really boring).

You can choose what section of 100 you want (they all do different things, they’ll have descriptions) or if you want to do 101 first. You can choose between Inorganic and Organic Chem (I recommend Inorganic, unless you think you want to do something that’ll need Orgo), and you can choose between honors Calc or Physics and regular Calc or Physics.

If you do take all of those, that fills up your 18 credits. If you were do not take either chem or physics, then you could take an SS or HU class, or some mini courses.

Oh, and backpacking is just saving classes so you can just hit register when you want to register.

Only Engineering 101 is offered first sem I think, not 100 (both are required for all engineers, right?).

Do you guys think it would be wise to get a 5 on the AP physics mechanics exam and skip Physics 140/141 class (I heard the class was really hard!), and use the extra class for elective or EGL requirement (and take physics 240/241 sophomore year like most other people). Or would I miss important info that I’d need later. I’m thinking about CS or BME major, so I guess I wouldn’t miss anything too important by using AP credit.

Thanks!

It’s my understanding that 140/141 and 240/241 aren’t really related, so it seems like you might want to take the credit. Talk to an engineer though.

No, both 100 and 101 are both first and 2nd semester. 151 if you want to take that instead of 101 is only offered first semester (at least this year it was, I don’t know about next).

I’d say do it Yosup.

Physics 140/141 is not a difficult class. If you could get a 5 on the AP Physics test you could ace that class without showing up.

Ok, so the class isn’t really hard and I won’t be missing anything important, so I have to choose between an easy A or 5 credits? I guess I’ll take the credits since I could use that slot for other things.

Will it matter if you take 100 or 101 first? Or no?

It doesn’t really matter which you take first, unless there is one section you really want, and it’s only offered one of the semesters (most are offered both semesters).

If you’re planning on CS and have credit from AP CS I think you should just take 280.

I got a 5 on the AP exam, but only got 2 credits ._.
