Hey whatsup,

ive been lurking around the forums reading whatever i can, but heres my dilemma:

Dad just lost his job+moms got a low paying job= no$$

my mom wants me to go to a medical program, if not a medical program than go to one of the carribean med schools later on. Im very intelligent, but very very lazy...the common conundrum. i want to apply only to med programs to witch i have a decent shot at getting into...as far as plain undergrad schools go, i wanna go wherever is cheapest.

here are the med programs im looking into in rank of how much id like to go: (idk how difficult it is to get into some of them, others i have a general idea)

1-CUNY Brooklyn
2-CUNY Sophie Davis
3-Union College/Albany Med School BA/MD/MBA
4-George Washington University
5-Drexel
6-U of Miami
7-St. Louis University
8-Sienna college/Albany Med School
9-St. Bonaventure University/George Washington Univ. Medical School
10-Case Western Reserve University

Normal undergrad:
SUNY Stony Brook, SUNY Binghamton, Penn State,

Stats-
SAT: taking again in october, expecting high 2100's low 2200's - got a 2050 in march
GPA- 90 unweighted/no clue what it is weighted
No ACT or SAT II- going to be taking both soon
97 and above on all regents exams.
will have taken 5 APs by end of senior year, as well as 4 honors courses
EC's: lots of various EC's-successfull Varisty Debater/student congress/Extemporanous speaker-three positions, two in math clubs, one in unite for site(club to collect and donate glasses to less fortunate).
College recs from 10th grade Bio and World history teachers
shadowed and volunteered with various physicians, and volunteered with American Heart Association(MAJOR part of organizing the Heart Walks, which raise over half a million dollars for heart disease and stroke research) also hand out food and help out the elderly for a few weekends thorughout the year
Have One sister who attended George Washington university undergrad, One who went to Sophie Davis, and one who went to Union. So i'm a legacy at all three in that sense.

I need to narrow down my list to more realistic schools so that i can apply and not waste whatever $$ im going to be able to get my hands on.

From experience 2 years ago, WUSL has crazy requirements to retain your spot while in a program: GPA=3.8 and MCAT = 36. It is not clear why to apply to program like this, with such stats you can get into Med. School regular route. Case PPSP is extremely hard to get into, D graduted #1 from her well known private school and she did not get into despite of getting Merit Package of over $25,000 / year from Case. This is not for discouragement, just FYI.

Ec’s are good but SAT scores/ GPA aren’t very competitive so try very hard on your SAT or do well on the ACT. CUNY seems like a good chance for you to get in, but I don’t know much about that program. You have a decent chance at Albany med programs and Drexel. Miami might be a bit of a stretch. Take everything else off the list and apply for the following:

1-CUNY Brooklyn
2-CUNY Sophie Davis
3-Union College/Albany Med School BA/MD/MBA
5-Drexel
6-U of Miami
8-Sienna college/Albany Med School
Preference towards seven years (most likely cheaper because taking a year off.)
You don’t have to do what I say, just trying to help.

7 year program is not always cheaper option, as some charge more for over certain number of crdit hours (fact, not theory). The price will be tetermined mostly by Merit / Need based financial package

so case western is a really competitive program, than ill take it off my list.

how much will being a legacy at gwu undergrad help me for the med program do you think?

also, i was under the impression both the st louis and the st bonaventure programs were on the less competitive side, am i really off or something, or do i just not fit what there looking for.

anybody think they can chance me for drexel?

i was doing some more reading and came across a few other interesting schools if someone could give me feedback on them…

NEOUCOM
UMDNJ-program actually partners with a bunch of diff schools so idk which one in particular but id be happy at any of them

First off, sorry about your family financial situation. I hope things do get better. No matter what your financial situation there are many avenues of aid whether it’s through the FAFSA (grants, loans, scholarships), or private loans, etc.

You say that you want to go wherever is cheapest, but then why are you choosing schools that are ridiculously expensive (even for some of the public ones - where you’d be an out of state student)?

George Washington University ([Costs of Attendance - The George Washington University](http://www.gwu.edu/apply/undergraduateadmissions/payingforcollege/costsofattendance)), or SLU ([Tuition, Room & Board Rates : Saint Louis University : SLU](http://www.slu.edu/x5224.xml)), Drexel ([Drexel University | Undergraduate Admissions | Financing Options | Tuition and Fees - Drexel Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.drexel.edu/em/undergrad/financing/break-down/default.aspx)), etc.

I belive that NEOUCOM is for in-state only, so if you are in the state then it is a decent choice. st.louis is a ranked 3 medical school and ranked 12 as a university so it is quite competitive. You have a good chance at Drexel, but SAT there is very important so get that up. I also think you have a good chance at bonaventure. You are in good shape once your SAT’s come into the 2200 territory or above.

md2- thanks, i really hope so too lol. im willing to take out the loans when it comes time to actually attend a med program. but as far an plain undergrad goes, thats where id skimp out due to $

breaker-thanks, iwas under the impression that st louis was one of the easier ones, and that it wasnt focused mostly on numbers but rather more focused on how good of a physician youll become. Drexel seems like a great program in my eyes as of now, but i was doing some more research regarding the program and it turns out that there are three seperate programs involving the drexel med school? lehigh, drexel and villanova? is there like a certain one that im better off applying to or does one application cover all three?

Urbanlegend, sorry I wasn’t clear in my post. When I asked, “You say that you want to go wherever is cheapest, but then why are you choosing schools that are ridiculously expensive (even for some of the public ones - where you’d be an out of state student)?” I was actually talking about the undergraduate portion, not the medical school portion.

In regards to the Drexel Program, applying to one school covers all three, in terms of chances and med shool, but you can apply to all three so you can choose between which colleges you would like to do your undergraduate studies. Lehigh has the best undergraduate ranking (35) so is a decent school. Whichever college you like best, apply to. Drexel is a decent program but it is very expensive like most programs. I’m sure that you can at least get financial aid. Good Luck.

NEOUCOM is MOSTLY for OH residents. They oficially can take no more than 5 OOS total out of 105 between 3 UG. Sometime they get only 2-3 OOS. If you are in OH, it is easier to get in than some other combined programs. However, it could have changed also since 2 years ago, since some programs at public schools in OH have been cancelled, so more people will consider NEOUCOM.

breaker- so i cant just apply to the program and later choose which undergraduate campus i would like to go to, i have to apply to the specific undergraduate school that i want?

miami-thanks alot for the info

md2-im willing to take loans if im in a medical program

so, guys, you think this is a good list of programs/schools to apply to so that i have a pretty good shot of getting in to any of the programs i apply to?

In regards to the drexel program, you can’t apply to the program and then choose. You have to apply through the college you want to do your undergrad in (that means you can apply to all 3 places with no increase in chances of getting in.) If you have the numbers and EC’s you can get an interview from which point that is all that matters. Your list seems like a reasonable list, and you have a pretty good shot at getting in to most of the programs on your list. I’d say that GWU is quite hard but GOOD LUCK!

thanks alot guys, the info so far really helped. does anyone have any info on the UMDNJ programs?

well i found a comprehensive list of the schools that UMDNJ is affiliated with for programs, but idk which i should look into applying to because there are so many, and i dont have a good idea as to which are the best/most competitive/most lax/etc. this is the list though:

BA/MD program with Boston University.
BS/MD program with Stevens Institute of Technology.
BS/MD program with New Jersey Institute of Technology.
BS/MD program with The College of New Jersey.
BS/MD program with The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.
BA or BS/MD program with Drew University.
BS/MD program with Montclair State University.
BS/MD program with Montclair State University. Eight-year program.
BA or BS/MD program with Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey-NewarkCollege of Arts and Sciences.
BA or BS/MD program with Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey-NewarkCollege of Arts and Sciences. Eight-year program.
BS/MD program with St. Peter’s College. Seven-year program.

which do you guys think out of these are my best shots??

also i dont know if this would help but i had my 10th grade biology teacher write me recomendations to apply to a summer program to help supplement my college app, but there very expensive and right before application time was when all the financial crisis came upon us. this is the same teacher that i will hopefully have write my college recomendation, i can upload the recomendation to give you an idea, of what she says about me as a student if that helps anyone to help me narrow down my list to schools that i have a better shot of entering.
