Thanks for clicking my thread... here's some background info:
I'm half white half Asian.
670 on math SAT II 2c
700 on social studies SAT II U.S. History
2010 on SAT, 630 C.R., 690 Math, 690 Writing, (after discussing w/ my friends, the average in my grade for my school is probably around a 1720)
2.6 GPA Unweighted (average unweighted GPA in my grade is around a 3.0)
I go to a very good public school in Long Island, New York. Ranked in top 100 High Schools in America.
I will be applying Liberal Arts (easiest program to get into) for ALL schools I apply to.
My essay will be very very good, because my college tutor who went to Columbia Uni for undergraduate and Yale for graduate school is editing it. (Slightly unethical...but completely legal lol)
My supplement questions will be very very good for the reason above^
My recommendations will be very good.

So assuming all of the above and after hearing my stats, what do you think my chances are of getting into the following schools?

Boston University (Early Decisioning to)
Northeastern University (Early Actioning to)
Syracuse University
Rutgers University
University of Delaware
American University
Drexel University (Safety)
University of Massachussets Amherst (Safety)

Additional Questions:
Since I'm half white half Asian I'd be considered as a racial minority, right? Would that increase my chances by a lot?

What other schools on the East Coast (but NOT in NY) that I haven't listed do you thinK i should apply to that are my level?

Thank you very much for reading. I will be reading every post in this thread and taking all advice/suggestions into account. Your help is very much appreciated...thanks again lol.

Hi,
Asians are not really considered a “minority,” so I don’t think that would increase your chances. Being half white/half asian doesn’t give you any edge either, I believe (but I could be wrong…). Your GPA is the most comprehensive idea of your academics that the Admission Officers get, so I think that might hinder you a little. Your SATs are strong, but still could be better to give you more of an edge (have you tried the ACT?). I think that you have a strong strong chance at all of the schools. Boston U and Northeastern being your biggest reaches. I think you have a good shot at one or the other, though!

You are a racial minority, but one that is overrepresented, not underrepresented at most colleges. Asians can get a boost at some colleges in the South and others that see few Asian applicants.

Many in your position would not mention being half Asian if your name is not Asian as it is believed Asians have a disadvantage at many colleges.

Also I forgot to list my extra currics:
Members of tons of different clubs (5 or 6)…no leadership positions though.
Varsity tennis in 10th and 11th grade, JV in 9th.
Violin and viola medals since 6th grade for NYSMMA (a New York musician’s test)

You need to boost that SAT up to a 2200 at least to try and counterbalance that GPA. For your reach schools its going to be hard for them to admit you based on the GPA alone. ED will help but BU is pretty good reach.

no, i don’t think BU will be that big of a reach. SATs are pretty good. Just try to show a good upward curve in your GPA. Hopefully your college tutor can work some magic with your essays. (so lucky)

One question though, why in the world would a columbia/yale graduate be a college tutor?

Well there common data set said that last year only 4% of their class had a GPA below a 3.0. I’m pretty sure that would make it a decently sized reach for him.

I’m not trying to get into an argument but I fail to see how getting good grades senior year will help. It will be hard to go from being a B/C student to being an all A student. Even then his GPA will still not go up .4-.5 with one semester of grades. I’m only saying this with BU in mind of course and I’m not saying that its not possible. I just don’t see how he will be fine (which i consider to mean match-low reach) when the facts point to the opposite.

My friend has similar stats for BU 3.1 GPA great SATS but after visiting an admissions counselor told him not to even apply because of his gpa. sorry to put you down, but they weigh gpa really really highly.

I don’t know, from what I have heard, Boston University is the type of school that cares a lot about sat scores because they are trying to raise their ratings. It is still a small reach since your gpa is so terrible, but not a huge one.

Check out like Uconn, UVM and Quinnipiac.

Also, for most of these places, I would report that I was white.
