I am worried to death about my math grade. I'm currently failing (yay), but it has nothing to do with slacking off....honestly, I don't know what's wrong with me but something's wrong. I worked with another math student 1-2 times a week last semester, hired a tutor (a math teacher from another HS in the country), and went to as many review sessions for my math class as possible. I always do my homework, study 2 hours at LEAST for quizzes, 8+ or so (over a week) for a test and I'm still doing poorly.
Last semester, I barely pulled a 74 (a C).

This semester, though I would say I've been working even HARDER, often talking to my math teacher, moving my seat directly in front of her in class, asking tons of questions, etc. Yet, I'm still failing and I only have 2 more tests in the class. IF I DON'T PASS, I don't graduate - and I'm terrified. I've NEVER failed a class before (I've already sent in my deposit for NYU...obviously, my track record is very good). I know I can make up the class in summer school, and while that would be mortifying, I'm worried about NYU. My teacher already said she would write a letter explaining the situation...but what now? What do I do? I feel stupid that I can't pass one silly math course and that even GRADUATING is an issue, I will be an Honors Graduate, Honor societies, great grades across the board, etc.

I'm actually going through the same thing and am pretty worried about it. Of course, it depends on what the admissions officers think. Also, you have to ask yourself... "Does math play an important roll in my future studies at NYU?" if it doesn't dont worry about it. It if does... try even harder in class. I know what you're going through. It's crazy. I'm having a problem in AP Calculus... and it's giving me headaches. We unfortunately do not have anymore tests in my class. My GPA dropped a whole lot this quarter because of my terrible grade in math class. BUT. Fortunately, I dont need calculus to sing =). (As my guidance counselor said). So... G'luck with everything. Tell us how it goes.

Well, my math grades have NEVER been good. The transcript NYU saw (no senior grades) had a 78 for one semester in math, one A-, and the rest somewhere between B- and B (a couple B+). My SAT math score was 600 (Reading and Writing 760 and 780). I'm studying Communication, so I'm hoping it won't be a problem. And I'm working on bringing the grade up!

If you already had low grades in math and they saw that, it means they let you in anyway (obviously). So they know math is your weakness. I'm sure you get that you really need to try to pass, but either way, I would most definitely recommend getting your teacher to write a letter to NYU just in case (immediately coinciding with the sending of your final transcript). And perhaps ask her if she would give them her phone number so if they needed to talk to her in person about it they could. If it seems very desperate, see if they will allow your acceptance to be contingent on your grade in summer school (hopefully since youve already been over the material once, and since it's a shortened time, you would do better in summer school if that happened).

Having a low math SAT score is one thing, failing math in senior year is another. If you fail this course and can't graduate, I think you're going to have a real problem, and a letter from your teacher isn't likely to be enough. You need to speak to someone from NYU now and ask what happens if you don't graduate when expected. They may not be willing to wait and see what happens in summer school.
