PULLMAN Washington State University, which once appeared on lists of top party schools, is moving to allow hard liquor sales at its student union building, golf course and before football games.

In recent years, "party school" was a likely response if "Washington State" was mentioned in a word association game. After all, there was ample evidence that the Pac-10 school in Pullman could party with the best of them. Or maybe we should say worst of them. Consider:

In 2002, an annual spring beerfest dubbed Senior Golf attracted 2,000 booze hounds from all over the state to drink till they dropped at various golf "holes." The event tied up traffic, closed streets, distressed neighbors and hospitalized five "golfers."

I guess there is a need for another "college bar" in Pullman when other universities are worried about problems with drinking. Never let the desire to educate get in the way of making more money.

I thought this might be a thread to list spectacularly bad ideas. So on a completely different topic:

Last year a town near us was having a vote involving a tax increase for their schools. The usual arguments were going back and forth, including those who opposed the increase saying that parents were looking for a "champagne" education for their kids on the taxpayers' backs. Then the local League of Women Voters, a supposedly neutral organization, decided they needed a way to get 18 year olds excited about voting for the first time. So they arranged for limousines to pick the kids up at some central location and drive them to the voting station. This was heavily publicized. My eyes nearly fell out of my head when I read it - people are complaining about a champagne education, and you are going to bring in high school students in LIMOUSINES to vote? If I was a "vote yes" proponent I would have been screaming NO NO NO NO as loud as possible - I can't imagine a WORSE image. The vote went down to a huge defeat, not surprisingly. I suspect the LWV wanted it to fail, I can't imagine anyone could think that the limos were a good visual if they wanted this to pass!

So that's my vote for dumb idea of the week.

Don't blame WSU...we just have a whacked out state. I just got my mail in ballot for the August 19 primary and...each candidate states which party they "prefer." Their "preference" does not mean that they belong or are endorsed by that party. It's just their "preference." And the top two vote getters for each race advance to the general election. Could be two Democrats (or people who prefer that party, I guess) which is not so very unlikely in this state. Or it could be a Socialist and a Libertarian or whatever. So how's that for bad ideas?

I'd say the kids are probably better off at the official college bar than than random one in town. I mean, the college would actually have SOME interest in the kid not getting to the point where he's going to the hospital. I don't see why this is a bad idea.

I don't believe in enabling disabling behavior.
I feel that institutions that put less weight on personal responsibility and logical consequences have more problems with students who are waiting for the college to show them where the "line" is & remind them over and over again & where it is a game to see if you get caught, than colleges that expect that adults mature and intelligent enough to be in college, will refrain from being a hazard to themselves or others & for those cases when they do not, have student honor boards to report to, not some "parent in abstentia"

it's really a lot cause either way, college students will drink, always have always will (especially if we're talking about the 21+ ones; I'm assuming the university will be competent enough to verify most of the ages; as much as any other bar). in this case it really makes no difference where the 21 year olds get drunk...
