Hi, I'm currently attending a small liberal arts school in rural PA and I'm looking to transfer. I initially planned on transferring at the end of the year to a more urban/competitive school (i.e. Northeastern, BU, Loyola, etc.). Well basically I'm not happy at this school and I no longer plan on attending for the spring semester. My high school grades were very poor and I finished out with about a 2.8 GPA. So far this semester as a Bio major I have around a 3.7 GPA. With my high school grades being so poor, only having one semester of college with a 3.7 GPA, and it being very late for spring transfer I feel my only plausible choices for transfer for next semester are Suffolk University(Boston) and Pace University(NYC-Manhattan). Of course these schools are more urban but they are less competitive. I just recently informed my parents of my intentions and they were not too happy about it and I certainly can't blame them. I told them about a month ago that I planned on transferring after freshman year and they were very supportive but they think that its a bad idea for next semester. I am really unhappy at my current school, it seems like I don't even act like myself anymore and I feel I really need a change now. I feel like I'm losing motivation and my GPA won't be as high if I stay another semester. I plan on attending one of these schools next semester and eventually transferring to a more competitive school with a solid GPA in college(fall'08, spring'09, or fall'09).

-Does it look bad to transfer twice like this?

-Are there any other urban schools still accepting applications for spring'08?(the more competitive the better)

I'd really appreciate any kind of advice or comments especially with very little time left to make a decision. Thanks in advance =]

I'm also a freshman attending a small liberal arts college in rural PA (susquehanna university) and I'm transferring out after this semester.. I seriously doubt that any university is still accepting transfer applications, the latest i know of was december first and thats LATE for a school, but look into a community college for the spring and then transfer from there. It's probably your best shot because you do have a low HS GPA and the longer you're in college the less a school will look at that stuff.. Also would need to see your SATs but as of right now even if you could apply to a competitive school they would see that HS GPA and would only consider you if you had insane SATs. I know how you feel though, I used to be outgoing and now I just stay in my room trying to pass the time until I leave in 2 weeks only I've been doing it since welcome week. You're lucky it's not affecting your work, my grades have been going down. Best of luck

I also don't think it's a good idea, fabregas. I know that is not what you want to hear. But, if you are asking about what will make your transfer app to the schools you really want the strongest, your "new plan" is not a good one.

Not saying it can't be done. But staying where you are now and applying for fall transfer might give you a much quicker entree to where you really want to be.

Now, we don't know what's making you unhappy where you are, how serious it is, how much you can do to live with it/cope with it for the next several months. Only you can decide that. Perhaps a session or two with a good counselor in your school's counseling office would help you figure out better whether you can cope with the disappointments of your current school or whether it is really that important to make a move right this minute (figuratively speaking).

Sometimes there is wisdom in sticking out a tough situation, showing yourself (and others) that you can do it. Showing that you don't run from problems, but find ways to address them. Sometimes the problems are such that a person should get outta Dodge asap. Don't know which yours is. But give yourself some time and the assistance of a good counselor to figure that out .... is what I would suggest.

I appreciate the responses. Andale, I'm not really sure why you don't think its a good idea. I know I said less competitive schools but that was basically in reference to Suffolk, and I've decided not to apply there. If I do apply to Pace, it would be for business and I've heard that they have a pretty good business school. The business school is probably at least as competitive as my current school. Since I feel its just as competitive, are there any other downsides to transferring there now? I'm not even sure I would want to transfer again, I was just thinking it was a possibility. I certainly wouldn't want to go in there thinking I was going transfer eventually. If I did eventually want to transfer, why would it look worse if I had transferred before? Thanks in advance.

I thought it was a bad idea because you seemed to be casting about for schools to transfer to just to get outta Dodge as quickly as possible. It seemed like you didn't like the schools at all (maybe my mis-read) and just wanted a temporary way-station for one term. I felt your "ultimate goal" transfer schools would see it that way, as well.

If that isn't really the plan, I don't necessarily think it's a problem. Although I do think it is not a good idea to transfer to an interim school for one term because of impatience, unwillingness to cope with difficulties. If it is because the current situation is totally untenable, that is something different.

So, this is just one opinion, and it is obviously without a full understanding of the situation because, on any anyonymous Board, we just can't know what problems you are actually facing.
