bad SAT scores

This is my very first post ever. I was just wondering how many occasions has someone with sub-1400 SAT scores gotten in to Yale. Thanks

Quite often. 1400 is not a bad score, and at schools like Yale, you can easily override a low SAT score with stong extracurriculars, accomplishments, etc.

About 25% of the people who attend Yale have SAT scores of 1380 or less.

...but you better have something to offset it!!!

ya....like millions in the bank

Or an AMAZING athletic talent.

Or just take the test again and do better. I started off with a 1340 and thought I was royally ****ed for the college admissions process, then I took it again (albeit after taking a course) and got a 1520. There is always hope.

Actually I applied already and got deferred. I'm waiting for a decision next week just like the rest of you. I've won a few poetry awards and I've been playing the violin for 12 years. Also, I'm in the top 3 percent of my class. To be specific, i got a 1370. My friend who goes to Harvard didn't think I had a problem but I just wanted some other opinions. Thanks a lot for the input.

700+ on each section is just good to have for some security. You are not in or out because of your scores at that point.

I'll just have to wait and see come March 31

does the committee look at sat I socres along with satII scores.....like if you got a 650 on the math in sat I but a 750 on the math in SATII......will they discount the math score from the first test cause the other one was soo good??......just wondering....

if you're young, take it again. i went from a 1300 to a 1580.

haha, "if you're young." I'm a senior; I'm sooo "old."

While you do have a shot, you have a very very slim one. Starting out with a very low SAT, your rank will not help you. How good at violin are you?

what's the worse score u can get and still get into an ivy..assuming one does pretty well in other areas like ecs etc.

I dont think its completely safe to say your chances are shot if you have crappy scores.....what if you just suck at taking standardized tests but your transcript is excellent???

4get about answering my question..it's pretty awkward..im sure u really cant answer it..

I found this on the ASC site.....its the number of matriculants with certain scores....

http://www.yale.edu/asc/newsletter/fall_2004.pdf

michelle hernandez is of the opinion that although schools release inf saying X% of matriculants scored below blablabla on the SAT, what they don't tell you is that the vast majority of these students are legacies, athletes and URMs. the truth (according to her) is that a school would rather not 'waste' a low SAT score on an applicant that doesn't stand out all that much. If they get hundreds of student body presidents that also volunteer at soup kitchens and have 1400+ on the SATs, theyre not gonna be all that interested with a student body prez who volunteers with a 1200. sucks, but they really care about rankings.

That is of matriculants, and not of acceptees. Most of the acceptees at lower scores are more likely to accept, while some higher scoring applicants may have chosen different schools at a higher rate.

Basically you can overcome bad scores by being amazing, or just touching the admission commitee. Maybe you are a bad test taker then your grades nad recommendations should handle bad scores. We can't see the perspective you are in, so we can't give you the full picture.
