I’ve had a really bad second semester this year as a sophomore. I’m taking 8 classes, and I’m getting a D in chemistry and a C in algebra 2, with a B in IB Spanish 3 and trig honors. All the other grades are A’s. I did the math and figured out that my gpa this semester would be a 3.125, and 4.125 weighted. I finished with a 3.72 unweighted GPA for the past 3 semesters, so my cumulative GPA would go down to a 3.56. I also plan on retaking second semester chemistry next year to replace the D I get this semester, so I was wondering if my chances for admission into a school like CU Boulder would be totally botched? I’m involved in several activities, like I plan to be a DECA officer and editor in chief for my school’s yearbook, in addition to NHS so I guess that shows leadership skills and all. Thanks so much!
I also am in the IB program, and I plan to take at least 1 AP class within the next 4 years.
I am in a similar situation as well. During my sophomore year, I had a really hard chemistry teacher and ended up getting a C in chemistry even though all my other grades were As and Bs. The best thing to do now is improve. Colleges do like to see upward trend especially after a tough year. This year as a junior I have maintained all As except for one B in physics and my counselor noted that this big improvement will definitely be looked upon favorably by colleges.
I would also work to get high test scores and take part in really unique ECs to buff up your resume and make up for your poor grades at least partially. Good luck!
