Bad solution to roommate sexile situation

Rutgers University freshmen are charged with invasion of privacy for using a hidden camera on a student | NJ.com

Wow. The comments said one of the kids suicided. Any reason to think this was a “sexile” situation or is this just in reference to the " sexile" thread? I guess it’s not funny after all.

"NEW YORK (CBS/WCBS) Authorities believe a Rutgers University student committed suicide after he was allegedly the victim of a sex tape that was secretly filmed by two other freshman-year students.

The victim is believed to have jumped off the George Washington Bridge Thursday, reports local news station WPIX. Officials apparently found the victim’s car near the bridge with his cell phone and computer inside. His identity is not being released. "

I’m wondering if the sex recorded a homosexual sex act. Otherwise, I’m surprised that a man would be the one who’d choose to commit suicide after being videotaped in a sex act.

Further Googling indicates that my guess was correct. Another tragic example of people thinking that it’s fine to bully homosexuals. I am sorry that if convicted, the perps will apparently face only 5 years imprisonment.

"Investigators suspect the victim was driven to suicide because his sexual preferences were revealed by the Internet broadcast. "

Now news reports say that one of the students whose sexual encounter was broadcast killed himself by jumping off the GW Bridge. Both of the students videotaped were men, so this is yet another gay youth killing himself.

I hope there’s a way to throw the book at the two freshmen who set up the video link.

It would seem likely that those charges will be upgraded to manslaughter.

What a horrible despicable thing to do. What could have motivated them to do such a thing?

The initial article is vague, but reading behind the lines, it suggests to me that the student who was filmed was alone.

Cross-posted with the above. I guess he wasn’t alone. Or, again, maybe he was. That article is vague, too. Maybe he was looking at gay porn?

This is so sad. My heart breaks for the parents who lost their son.

I just don’t know what I’d do if I was the parent of one of the kids that crossed the line of decency and consideration for another person. Big Brother is watching, and unfortunately, he comes in the form of the ******* roommate who thinks it’s funny to humiliate other people.

Would this qualify as a hate crime against homosexual students?

Either way, this is a terrible. And it’s not just in college. A 13 year old died last night from injuries sustained from trying to hang himself earlier. Since the start of the school year, another two boys killed themselves, 15 and 13. All three were bullied over their perceived sexual orientation. Unfortunately, many more have killed themselves, for assorted reasons.

"It wasn’t immediately clear where or how the live feed was broadcast, and investigators took strict precautions to protect the identity of the victim. But on his Twitter feed, Ravi vaguely refers to an internet instant messaging service that includes live video streams called iChat.

“Roommate asked for room again. Its happening again. People with iChat don’t you dare video chat me from 930 to 12,” Ravi posted Sept. 22, the day after cops say he tried to livestream, for the second time, one of the victim’s sexual encounters. The website reports Ravi’s Twitter page, which apparently has been taken down, has 150 followers.

On Sept. 19th, Ravi posted, “Roommate asked for the room til midnight. I went into Molly’s room and turned on my webcam. I saw him maknig out with a dude. Yay.”"

Oh no. What a tragedy.

I will note that in several threads complaining about sexiling or similar problems, filming the activity has been suggested–perhaps jokingly. This shows why that’s a really bad idea.

this is the saddest thing ever. My heart goes out to that poor boy’s family.

My heart goes out to the parents of that poor boy. How terrible for his family and friends.

I also have some sympathy for the parents of the perpetrators. Maybe they are homophobic &*^%@#s, but then again, maybe their reaction to the whole thing was a horrified, “You did WHAT?!” Certainly I’ve had that reaction a time or two to something my son did.

Homophobia and just being mean to the core.

I was reading some of the comments in the articles I have come across pertaining to this tragic story, but how can one prove if this was a hate crime? The way I initially viewed this was that it was more an act of immaturity than a hate crime-- immaturity gone wrong. It’s more like “hahaha, look two guys getting it on together” just for laughs. Does it make it more of a crime because it led to the kid’s suicide?

I’m torn because the way I see it is that the roommate was trying to get back at the victim because he was sexiling him, perhaps not so much about the kid being gay. The roommate was probably tired of being kicked out of the room and wanted to play a prank.

But then, the fact that he went on to broadcast this when he knew that his roommate had previously engaged with a male makes me think he knew it would humiliate the poor kid, especially since the kid was reserved and private. Maybe if it was a girl, the roommate may or may not have broadcast the act =</p>

I agree-- I think it’s more good kids making a really bad decision they did not think through at all. Now three people are on very different paths than they were a month ago. I’d bet both kids have spotless records to date.

Hunt - the joking reference on the other thread was in regards to roommates have sex while their roommate is in the room, not that that is a good idea either, but clearly different from this sad situation.

This is so very sad. I can’t help but think that even though this went out on the internet, if this kid could have gained just a little more perspective he would have realized that he could change schools, move away, grow a beard, cut his hair whatever - and no one would ever know about this terrible thing that was done to him.

It definitely sounds as if this could be considered a hate crime. So much loss for all involved and their families; it is so very sad.

I don’t see any evidence to think the two kids were “good kids.” Broadcasting your roommate having sex is a fairly awful thing to do. That’s the sort of thing done by bullies, not good kids.

^^^^Really? Do “good kids” film someone in their most intimate moments sans their knowledge or permission and then go on to post it for all the world to see? Whether a gay or straight encounter, I can’t imagine any scenario where a “good” person finds any merit whatsoever in doing something so cruel to another human being. I’ll give you they probably didn’t anticipate the victim going on to jump off a bridge, but they would had to have known it would cause him pain, humiliation, and possible ridicule from his peers.
