Bama Bound, Roll Tide on the River, Alabama Action, & WOW week

R6L: which APs are you taking this year? My D is taking Statistics, English Lit & Chemistry. The statistics ap class gives credit for a computer class, not math; and chemistry (depending on the score) places you out of either 4 (for a 3 or 4 score) or 8 (for a 5 score) of the 8 required natural science credits for an arts & science major. Since she already has English ap credit from the language class last year, I don’t think she can double dip for those credits.

Since D is taking foreign language credits for IHP, she won’t have to take any computer classes so the statistics ap class won’t affect her course selections for fall. As for chem, I think she could take a semester off before she decides what science to take.

The math piece is the one she’ll have to wait for Bama Bound to figure out. While she scored high enough on the math sections of the ACT & SAT, she didn’t take calculus in HS (she decided to take statistics this year instead) so she’ll have to go through the placement testing at Bama Bound. I’m recommending that she get that math out of the way 1st semester, so it won’t be too long since she took a math class.

*if we go to an early Bama Bound, how are we supposed to register for classes. AP credits aren’t in til mid July, so I would hate to schedule a redundant class *

My younger son (who started Bama in the fall), was able to register based on the assumption that he had passed his AP exam (like calculus, etc).

This is a change from prior years. My older son wasn’t allowed to do this. Certainly, many complaints forced this change.

^^ok good…

I took AP Calc, AP Stats, AP World, AP Gov and will probably be doing the AP Micro test

Roll Tide on the River dates… In case anyone wants to coordinate with Bama Bound.

Roll Tide on the River (RTOR) is an adventure orientation trip exclusively for incoming freshman. RTOR enables new student to meet and develop friendships with classmates before arriving on campus. Students will learn basic canoeing and camping skills, plus the ins and outs of college life from upper class students.

The trip begins with facilitated icebreakers & other group initiatives. To be followed by canoe safety and instruction. Participants will navigate on Lake Tuscaloosa to Treasure Island. Camp will be set up and dinner will be prepared as a group before dozing off to nature’s music. The following day, participants will break down camp and paddle back to the launch site and return to the Outdoor Recreation Department located within the University Recreation Center.

RTOR trip leaders are experienced outdoor guides, and hold a minimum certification in CPR. Several of the RTOR staff members hold more advanced certifications.

ROLL TIDE ON THE RIVER DATES:

OK - Back to the Bama Bound parents attending questions -

It looks like the students and parents basically do not cross paths much at all during Bama Bound. Other than getting another chance to see the school, is there any real reason for a parent to go? It looks like we will not be at all involved in advising, registration etc. In the perfect world much of that is planned beforehand anyways - right? Would it be obvious that your child did not have a parent there?

(Slightly) considering sending DS on his own, arranging some sort of RT transport to airport etc. It seems like with such a short trip and not having to bring a lot this might be the perfect opportunity to try traveling solo. He’s gong to have to do it sometime and is not phased by the prospect.

Thoughts anyone?

It looks like the students and parents basically do not cross paths much at all during Bama Bound.

I went with my older son, but I didn’t go with my younger son.

When I went with my older son, there were several meetings where parents and students were together. There were also times when they met with parents and students separately.

I think it all depends on the child. Some want a parent there; some don’t care.

Since many of you already know so much about Bama, some might find some of the info repetitive.

Some of the things that get covered with parents… (memory from nearly 3 years ago - so may be fuzzy)

FERPA laws
deposits to Action cards
meal plans
security on campus
honors classes
registering process
advising in the colleges
Parents luncheon

other stuff I don’t remember. LOL

Statistics is a computer class, but it is really more of a business class that many majors have to take. Generally, I recommend registering for classes assuming you passed the AP tests, but my college didn’t seem to be encouraging this for Calculus. Math is special because it has a placement test that students are exempt from if they get a C or better in AP Calculus.

The $200 fee for Bama Bound is a course fee in addition to the $7 technology fee assessed by the honors college, which apparently makes it possible to claim as a tax deduction because it is a mandatory fee.

Both of my parents really enjoyed going to Parent Orientation. They were given some gifts for attending and got to meet other parents. Students see the parents at the college advising session, some presentations, and meals. If they wanted to open an account at the credit union, they would need the parent there if they are not yet 19. Everything else they can do without a parent. Consider also renting a post office box then or when school starts. From experience, renting one online is more of a hassle than waiting in line and getting one in person.

A lot of students bring their parents to Bama Bound and a lot don’t. Since I coordinate all the travel for my family, it doesn’t seem as big a deal for me to travel alone as it does others, but I have an idea that might work for both of you. Both you and your S will fly down together, but make it like he’s traveling along. Have him check in for his flight and drop him off alone to make his way through security. You can follow later, checking yourself in and meeting him at the gate. The two of you could even sit in different parts of the airplane to make him feel as if he’s traveling alone, even though his parent is a couple rows ahead of him. You don’t need separate reservations or anything unless you want to. He should find that traveling solo isn’t really that bad. Even with problems arise, it’s manageable. Business travelers fly solo all the time.

*The $200 fee for Bama Bound is a course fee in addition to the $7 technology fee assessed by the honors college, *

Do you mean for Alabama Action or Outdoor Action?

*If they wanted to open an account at the credit union, they would need the parent there if they are not yet 19. *

True…

But, that could also be done on move in day…or…

Since the campus Alabama Federal Credit Union (AFCU) is a member of CU Service Center “shared branching”, you can open an account at one of the many member CUs and still do banking at AFCU. CUServiceCenter.com

There are nearly 4000 member branches nationwide.

Sorry, I did mean that the $200 charge would be for Alabama Action/Outdoor Action.

The credit union on campus is Alabama Credit Union (it’s not a Federal Credit Union). I don’t think you can open an account at a shared branching institution however (and I use shared branching a lot). It is also important to note that while Alabama CU is a member of the shared branching network, they do not do transactions for other institutions at their locations on campus or near campus. You can still go to your local credit union that is a member of the network and transfer money to the student’s Alabama CU account, they just can’t do the opposite without going to a different location. Technically a parent could get account opening documents notarized and just send them with the student, but fingerprints might still be needed.

You’re right, it’s not a federal CU…forgot about that. I use shared branching at the Alabama CU that is at UAHuntsville, but don’t know if the one at UA has some restrictions that the other ACU’s don’t have.

You can open an acct online…

[Alabama Credit Union](http://www.alabamacu.com/)

If your child is under 19, you will have to be on the acct, too. You can also call and open an acct by phone, using the info from the above link.

Can you do both Alabama and Outdoor Action? I can’t seem to find dates for either. I also can’t find an application for Outdoor Action.

^^^

I don’t think so…I think they both occur at the same time…the full week before school starts.

Both Alabama Action and Outdoor Action occur at the same time, so you can’t do both. I was kinda surprised that the two programs don’t interact other than the fact that you’ll see participants from the other program back at your residence hall.

Does anyone know where I can find an outdoor action registration form? And does anyone know how much it costs?

The AA form says $195, but people on here are saying $200…do i have the wrong form, or are they just rounding?

bamalover, that’s the same form off the honors college web page that Sea_tide directed us to, so I’m assuming that’s the right form. It does say $195.00 for the fee, but like you, I’ve seen $200.00 else where–perhaps just on this forum??? Anyway, that’s what we’re sending in!

Bikedad

does the one credit counts as one of your 16 semester credits?

Is 16 credits the max you can take, or is that all the scholarship covers? If you go over one over 16 because of Alabama Action, would you be charged one credit OOS tuition? Also, since Alabama Action is an honors course, would you not be able to take any other honors courses? What’s the maximum enrollment for Alabama Action? I’m guessing it’s first come, first serve.

Contact Ms. Gates to be sure, but I believe its OOS tuition for any hours over 16. You can take more than 16 credits, but the scholarship will not cover those extra hours. If it’s Alabama Action, I dont know if AA charges for that credit hour in the first place. If they do, as I understand it that credit will count as if it were a normal class.

And there’s no limit on honors courses, so you can take more if you choose. In fact, taking more is a good thing because you need a certain number of honors credits to graduate ‘with honors’.

Finally, AA is first-come first-serve, although I’m not sure of a max enrollment. Again, Ms. Jami Gates is the one to talk to.

the 16 credits limit per semester that the scholarship covers.

i haven’t really gotten a handle on how much the extra charges would be if one went over the 16 hour limit.

that is one of the unknowns that i am not all that comfortable with.
