Bama Bound, Roll Tide on the River, Alabama Action, & WOW week

Alabama Action usually enrolls about 100 students.

True…but is that a “limit” or is that the number that usually applies? MyBama doesn’t list a number (or at least not the last time I looked.)

I just remember my son telling me that 100 students were registered to do the August 2009 session of Alabama Action. Because he could not attend Bama Bound until late June, he sent in his registration for Alabama Action just after the application went online.

If one is interested in Alabama Action, I would suggest they register before the Bama Bound sessions start to ensure themselves a spot. Yes, the 1 credit counts as one of the 16 covered by the scholarship, any credit over that will have an additional cost ($850 OOS, idk the instate rate). UA has been allowing students to officially take the credit as part of their spring semester if they had maxed out their scholarship for the fall. Of course, they could always take 3 4-credit classes, one 3-credit class, and the AA/OA credit their first semester.

Does anyone know when the OA application will become available?

I was just registering for bama bound, and i saw that there is a box where you select check in/out dates for the dorms. I noticed that you dont have to select a date for either. If I dont select a dorm check in/out date, will I not be able/have to spend the night in the dorms( I live in Birmingham, so the 45 minute drive isn’t bad at all)?

Nick,

From my experience filling out online forms, there is normally an option on drop-down menus that is either blank option or “select.” When you try to choose one of those options, the form won’t usually let you continue until you select something. As for spending the night at Bama Bound, I highly recommend it. It’s included in the fee regardless and you have the chance to meet a lot of cool people. In addition, there are organized activities that run until 9:30PM and you’d have to be back on campus early the next morning anyway. If you ended up not selecting dates for a dorm room, you should be able to go back and fix that or you could just give orientation a call at 1-800-392-2777 and have them fix it for you.

Yes, and UA will also sometimes let you take it for “no credit” if that is preferred “credit-wise/cost-wise”. My kids have done that when they don’t want to go over their max credits, but still want the experience. You can also do that for Peer Mentoring and that new AP community service project that has just been introduced.

Well, if you’re going to the earliest May Bama Bound, it’s a one day thing - so no overnight. That may be why there’s a choice.

Also, some kids stay an extra night for the later Bama Bounds, that also may be why there’s some options involved.

Latest info on Roll Tide on the River

Thanks for the roll tide link. I had this one confused with Outdoor Action. Glad to see there’s multiple dates. Will discuss with son if he wants to do this. May be interested in the July dates.

i emailed someone yesterday asking about the credit being moved from fall to spring semester. the answer i got is that that is not possible.

: /

^^^

Really? I thought we heard that some had done that.

Is your D’s Fall schedule too full for fall? How about doing it for no credit?

Is WOW mandatory for incoming freshmen? Info is not posted for 2010 and we are trying to figure when DS has to move into dorms. If not mandatory, is it really helpful and do most kids attend?

WOW is not mandatory (it begins the Friday before school starts), but it is highly recommended.

I would want my child to be there at least for most activities, if possible.

Yes, most kids attend…most freshmen move in on that Friday…some move in on Saturday. I think that Friday is Aug 13.

My kids wanted to move in when their suitemates were moving in so that they could all kind of bond at the same time. I think they were concerned that if they showed up late, the new suitemates would already be friends.

Wow Week is full of ice-breaker activities and it also gives a student a good chance to become very familiar with the campus before classes start.

When were you thinking of having your child arrive?

Officially, one is supposed to take the Alabama Action/Outdoor Action credit in the fall, but looking at the courses for Spring 2010, I can see that 2 people who participated in Alabama Action and 2 that participated in Outdoor Action were able to override into the corresponding sections (the sections each have an allowed enrollment of 0, but and actual enrollments of 2).

I highly suggest participating in WOW activities, but if you have other campus obligations, those take priority. If anything, I highly suggest attending the OOS student banquet/mixer (last year’s was at Bryant-Denny Stadium). Very good food is served and you get to meet other OOS students, not all of whom are in honors.

^^^

Glad to hear about the OOS student banquet mixer! Bama used to have “regional parties,” but one big blow-out is probably a much better idea!

Did not really have a set date to arrive - just in the planning stages of what the end of summer will look like. Also have younger sib starting classes in high school that same week so trying to plan early.

SRO2007, I also would encourage you to have your student participate in the WOW activities. You meet lots of people. There’s lots of food – and not just at the OOS event. But, if you move in at the same time as the other freshmen, you will have plenty of help unloading the car. Last year, various student groups assisted with the move-in, and when it’s getting hot outside, you are very glad when someone asks if he or she could carry that box or bag or whatever to your student’s room.

idk about her schedule yet. i was just asking for my own knowledge and to see what they would say.

if she is going to rush, then i am not sure that will take priority over AA or OA or IA.

now on to the next task … getting rec letters!! ugh!
