Band Recommendations?

Go get the Rusty Cooley album.
Its pure, neoclassical, guitar OWNAGE.
Hey, I guess winning Guitarmageddon does prove you pwnz0rz.

Emeraldkity4, you know about Smoosh, the rock band made up of the 9 & 12 year old girls? Wow, you're in the know.

Ubercollegeman, these are bands to check out:

I Am Kloot
Something for Rockets
The Veils
Blackout Effect
Ringside
The Stands
Denver Harbor
Elefant

The Canadian scene right now is rich w/ awesome bands:

Stars
Metric
Broken Social Scene
Arcade Fire
The Hidden Cameras

Your list is pretty mainstream. Some of the stuff other people recommended is quite awesome, like Belle & Sebastian, Snow Patrol, Sinead O'Connor.

My tastes are a bit eclectic, but check out THE BUZZC0CKS. Best band ever. Kind of like the beatles, but not quite. They're like a cross between the Sex Pistols and the Beatles.

How come no one has mentioned Coheed and Cambria? BRILLIANT, especially "The Crowing." They're emo-core and much more powerful and melodic than your average Dashboard Confessional.

If you're willing to look into foreign stuff, Glay and Malice Mizer rules. Very melodic, gothic, but not fake. Check out Glay's "Kanojo"--an instrumental piece if you want to check out their beautiful eclectic sound.

Wow, there are tons of good recomendations.

Some of the ones I don't think have been mentioned:
The Faint, Pavement, Stellastarr, Straylight Run, Bright Eyes, Ted Leo/Rx, The Streets, Phantom Planet.

Oh, you have to check out the "Grey Album," a mash of Jay-z's Black Album (my most FAVORITE everrrr) and The Beatles White Album. Google it, you can probably find a copy free online somewhere.

You might also like stuff along the lines of Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Dispatch, etc., but I don't know.

I'm sad you hate nasal-y white boy signing, because you're really missing out. Then again, you probably don't want to take reccomendations from the girl with the Justin Timberlake poster on her wall. But trust me--Justified is great CD.

hehe I'm the strange one who likes country. oh well. :)

"I'm sad you hate nasal-y white boy singing..."

Bright Eyes/Conor Oberst is a nasaly white boy singer.

I disagree; Bright Eyes is more like drunken white boy signing. His acoustic/folk type stuff can be a bit whiny, but his electronic-y stuff isn't really. Either way, it's mostly all good.

I meant stuff like Something Corporate--now that's some good whiny/nasaly white boy music.

But pop-punk whiny is a different story. Simple Plan must die.

Celebrian, I love country. You're not cool unless you do.

To the OP, try:
The Frames
Rufus Wainright
Guster
Dispatch
Ben Folds
Eliott Smith

Uhh you might hate all these or, more likely, you'll already know them. Eh.

Yay, i'm not the only one

On another note, I had no idea so many different bands existed. I mean I've heard of them all, I just never really thought about it

There really is nothing more fun that downloading a song from each one of the bands mentioned to check out some new sound. From this thread alone I have probably found 4 or 5 bands that I really like that I didn't even know existed.

If you like Conor Oberst, you might like the band that he signed and is working w/ from Omaha. They're called Tilly & the Wall. Instead of a drummer, they have a tap-dancer for percussion. They're better live, and when I saw them perform, I had the biggest smile on my face because I thought there was something so refreshing about them.

Metallica and Iron Maiden. No musician or band can ever top "Unforgiven", "Fade to Black", or "The Trooper".

Check out Death from Above 1979. The band members were former stockbrokers who met while in jail. For some reason their fans like to throw things at them on stage, ranging from panties to raw meat. Funny, huh?

Globalist-I love Tilly!! I saw them open for Bright Eyes a year or so ago, and they are by far most joy-inducing band ever. Their MP3s (which you can download from the team love site) are cool, but don't do justice to the live show.

Saddle Creek Records, run out of Omaha, Nebraska, is home to some of the best indie music ever. Bright Eyes has already been mentioned (If anyone wants a copy of the leaked new albums, hit me up on AIM). Desaparecidos is Conor's angrier more political side project. Rilo Kiley is some incredible folkier stuff, check out "With arms outstretched." Cursive, the Faint, Azure Ray, and Son, Ambulance are all bands worth checking out.

Ubercollege-I think you might really like (the now defunct) At the Drive-In. They aren't easy stuff to listen to, but their music kind of spans the genre gap between Modest Mouse + RATM/RHCP. I'd also like to second Juliusmonkey's recommendations of Straylight Run + the Grey Album... I don't think I could live without either of them. And if you, or anyone else, wants to check out some of this music without fear of the RIAA throwing you in prison, I'm always wiling to share stuff over AIM.

Effulgy-I went on a HUGE old school punk kick a couple years ago. Listened to the Sex Pistols/Buzz****s/Clash nonstop. I love "TV Party" and the one song about masturbation (forget the title).

I forgot to mention this...

Check out http://www.epitonic.com/ You can find tons of new indie stuff there, and not just rock, they even have electronic stuff and hip-hop. Plus they have of streams of all the artists, which makes finding new bands even easier.

Could this be the greatest thread ever invented?

I've picked up on about five bands I otherwise might never had heard of that I love. Thanks, let's keep this going...

Oh, The Walkmen! I think you'd like them.

The Walkmen rock! They went to St. Alban's in D.C.

Really?! They must be rediculously preppy then.

No, surprisingly they're really cool, laid-back guys. When you meet them, you wouldn't know they had such a preppy background.
