Bank Of America Student Leaders 2012

@Michal95

The list of markets is on the website. There are 44 markets in the U.S. and then London.

@sandeezy, you could definitely do that! there was a girl from my market who met up with people from her family one of the days that we were there when we had free time. you just have to clear it by your group leaders. and like i said, i used all four of my days off to stay in DC longer, so that could also be an option!

@michal95, each market is different with the days that they run their internships from. i know that my market (detroit) was one of the last markets to start and end (started june 20th, ended august 12th.) a lot of the other markets started earlier but we couldnt because detroit schools get out really late for the summer. also, the london market worked well into september because their school schedules are drastically different from the united states’ schools. it all depends on the market, and they will tell you the dates it will run if you get offered the position. you’re not locked into anything if you apply, so if you get offered the job and the dates dont work with your school schedule, you could always turn it down. also, i met a girl from delaware at the DC summit whose school started before her internship was supposed to end, so she worked it out with her internship coordinator that she could start the internship a week early and then end it a week earlier than the other interns in her market. just ask–they’re so flexible with schedules!

Does anybody know if you can request to work at a certain service organization? Or do they have to pick it for you?

I’m pretty sure they pick it for you. I’m applying from Broward. Good luck to everyone!

does anyone know how competitive the NJ market is?

What exactly are the dates for the internship at a local program?

Is it during the SUMMER or SCHOOLYEAR?

It’s a summer program.

@billikens

what was the detroit interview like?

have any of you heard if participating in this program will look good on your college app?

Does anyone know if it helps or hurts you to have gone to previous leadership programs/summits etc.? Does it make you look sort of over-qualified?

@akcari the interview was laid back but professional… you are actually interviewed by your internship coordinators (there are two of them and they are women) and i got interviewed by one other woman at the same time, so it was like a panel asking me questions. but they basically asked about my previous leadership experience, why i think community service is important, why i want to participate in the program, how i define a leader, etc. they also asked my fun questions too about travelling and stuff because i love to travel. just be yourself because all they’re really trying to do is get to know who you are. i believe they only interviewed like 15-20 people so by the time you get to that stage everyone is a really good applicant and it has already been narrowed down significantly.
@browning yes, definitely does because bank of america is such a big name. also helped me get a lot of scholarship money.
@funsizedjas definitely not. a lot of the student leaders i met had been to so many previous summits and programs that i lost track! they may even see it as a plus!

I just submitted my application. I got an email saying that notification would be by May 31, 2012. That seems really late. When were people notified last year?

Are you paid hourly or a large check at the end of the program? If so, for how much?

Would any previous applicant be willing to help review essays? I really want to get in and I’m having a hard time figuring out what to say and I’m continuously second guessing my responses. HELP !!!

watchmesoar, wow, they’ve really moved the notification date late. The dates seem to vary by market–take a look at last year’s BoA thread to see if they’ve got any mention of acceptances for your market.

What seems to happen is that the acceptances go out first, sometimes by phone, sometimes by letter. Some of the accepted students turn down BoA because they’ve made other plans. Then the next person on the list is contacted. It seems that each local market waits until all its spots are filled, and then sends out rejection letters.

DianeLynn, in my daughter’s market some organizations paid their students weekly or monthly, can’t remember which, while others (like my daughter) got one paycheck at the end of the summer. It’s the stipend amount with taxes taken out depending on your personal situation.

I am applying and I have a question. I do have eight free weeks in the summer, but I already have another leadership commitment that lasts until mid-June. Should I put my “last day of school” as the end of this out of town commitment or actually put the last day I have school and hope I can schedule my eight weeks later if I’m accepted? Thanks!

@watchmesoar, that is really late, i found out in april last year. but i also know that they were having a lot of people contacting them asking when they were going to find out, so maybe they just put a later date so that they would for sure tell you by then and avoid having questions being asked all the time. i assume at that point EVERYONE will have an answer, including the rejections.
@dianelynn i got paid hourly on biweekly intervals. the organization that you are working for pays you. you get paid $10 an hour, you also get paid for the week that you are in DC.
@georgiagreenguy i wouldn’t put that as the last day of school. i would put your true last day of school and then work with them to figure out how you can fit in the eight weeks if you get the internship. they already knew when my school district (and the districts of the other interns in my market) ended school before we even told them last year, so they might be confused if you put a later date.

Does anyone know when the DC week is? My school ends in the third week of June… seven weeks before the DC week would probably be somewhere in May for me… and its a 7-5 type job? O.O …would they throw me out because of that?

I just heard about this from my guidance counselor and am pretty interested. I’ve done two similar summer leadership camps in the past and would love to do this one – especially since it includes a week in DC. The only thing concerning me though are the dates of the 8 week working internship. Classes start as early as August 22nd for some schools, so I’m afraid the internship will either run through/past the date classes begin or at least come awfully close. Any ideas?
