Has anyone gone to their orientation yet? D’s is Tuesday afternoon…

FYI, there were a total of 3600 applications across the country for 230 positions. Stiff competition!!!

D’s orientation was really interesting, and she’s even more excited about the summer. The person in charge of the program across the country was there, and spoke about the DC conference…it sounds like an excellent experience, as well as a lot of fun! Her responsibilities sound like it will be about half with hands-on experience with the work that the non-profit is actually involved with (summer program with low-income kids), and about half learning the leadership/organizational/business side of operating a non-profit. Cool stuff. The other 4 students were all very impressive—outgoing, self-assured, and obviously very sharp kids.

wow this thread is huge. good to see that a lot of people are responding in comparison to other years

Am I the only Student Leader having a less-than-ideal experience so far in the internship? My local branch sends us to the Boys & Girls Club, which at first thought would be wonderful considering most of the kids are low-income, and myself have lived in a low-income to modest income environment for most of my life. However, I do not feel that this internship is any different from a regular summer job. My work schedule consists of just having 4-12 years old at the Gym for 4 hours and monitoring them during lunch for about 3 hours. No work behind the scenes, just working as another staff member. I do not mean to feel entitled but I felt like I would learn a bit more about non-profit organizations, their structure, behind the scenes, etc and not just babysit kids through lunch for half my shift. The pay is great, and working with the kids at gym is fun…but I thought I would also be able to help them in their other rotations…like computers, class time, etc, etc.

Am I expecting too much?

albeit, i haven’t been running any non-profits the first week, we have been involved at a deeper level than just counselor. whether it’s teaching from our own lessons, planning special events, or speaking with directors, my experience has been more meaningful than a summer camp counselor

DANGIT!! Why did I not know about this…

I’m hoping you will all post about your experiences this week in Washington. At last check, D was having an INCREDIBLE week there.

epic week.

that is all.

astrophysicsmom: do you mind telling us how your d’s experience was? i hope she had fun!

i really want to apply again next year!

her description: AMAZING!

Hey everyone!
I just participated in the Bank of America program over the summer. For anyone who enjoys making a difference and getting paid good money to do it this is a great program. The trip to Washington, was worth all the money as well. Even though Bank of America isn’t at prime time they spend a lot of money in each individual. Not to mention during your trip to Washington, DC you are on the clock and get paid to go. The people come from all over the United States and London. I made so many friends over the trip my friends l list on facebook almost doubled. I would recommend everyone to at least apply!

Has anyone heard whether B of A will be offering this program for 2010? Considering their financial woes…just wondering.

^^They are, I just got an email encouraging me to reapply, because I didn’t get in last year…I don’t think I’m going to…I poured a lot of (now wasted) time into that application

I’m hearing all these ravings about the program in the thread, but I’m wondering, what did you guys exactly do? What made it so amazing?

is a transcript optional?

Hey guys, I’m thinking about applying. I have a question though…
Is this process binding? I am applying for another program and that one is binding so I was just wondering if this one is too. I don’t find out about the other program until after the deadline for this one…Hmm.

Hello! I’m a junior applying for the Student Leader internship this year. I’d love to hear from anyone else who’s applying to stay updated:)
Also, I was wondering whether, for the “community activities,” they want strictly volunteer work. Because I have quite a few other clubs and things that don’t necessarily contribute much “service” or show “leadership” but may look good. what do you guys think?

Hi, I’m a junior 2011 and I’m applying for this internship. Since I live in the East Bay Area, I think I’ll be under the Oakland, CA market. I think I’m gonna get cut though ): 5 ppl per market is just way too competitive uggghh. Do any NEI Student Leader alumni have tips for me? & for the current applicants, what have you done?

bakxchaixDD- I don’t even see where it asks for a transcript so i assume so. It has where you can optionally submit a resume however.

thatelephant- Nothing in the description implies that it’s binding, although it does seem very competitive. I definitely would apply as a backup.
