Bank Situation... :[

To current students! Which bank should I join?? Which bank has nearby atms, an accessible branch near campus? My brother in law was suggesting bank of america but I heard the closest one is far away... any help is appreciated! thanks

Good question...

thanks........ lol

yeah actually i would love to hear an answer to this question

im planning on opening up an account when I go over there for the GAAP weekend...

Bank of America is on Wisconsin and O Street, which is about a five minute walk out of the front gates. Despite the fact that I rack up ATM charges whenever I go to a Chevy Chase or GUAFSCU terminal, I still stick with my B/A.

Plus, my dorm this year and my apartment next year are equidistant to Bank of America and Chevy Chase/GUAFSCU, so I just kept my bank account from home.

If, however, you're opening an account and will use it primarily for Georgetown purposes (and nowhere else, except maybe Maryland and Virginia), then I suggest you open an account with Chevy Chase. They have a branch in the Leavey Center (up Bulldog Alley), and they have an ATM at Leo's and every Metro station. It's quite convenient, and I would have switched if it weren't for sheer laziness (and brand loyalty).

Get GUAFSCU. Chevy Chase is one of the, if not THE most IDIOTIC bank I have ever bankwed with. It is AWFUL.

There are two GUAFSCU ATMs and they recently joined a network with 42,000 more (so Chevy Chase isn't better in that respect anymore). Other things that Chevy Chase prints nice and small on their brochures? I get charged $4 a month just to have a debit card, and their whole system is absolutely archane.

(I hate Chevy Chase. with a passion.)

I have Bank of America...it's not too far away, and since I have direct deposit with my work-study job, I don't make frequent trips down there. I'm just sort of addicted to online banking, and will probably never make the switch to GUAFSCU, even if it is more convenient location-wise.

are there guakscu branches other than the ones in or near georgetown?

oh and what about washington mutual?

Guasfcu is the love of my life. There is only one bank branch, but they just added thousands of ATMs all over the place. It's just so much faster and less hassle because it is run by students.

a bank run by students?! uh..... that makes me feel a bit uneasy

The statistic (according to GUASFCU) is that over 80% of incoming freshmen open an account at GUASFCU. Everyone I know who uses it really likes it. The students know what they are doing and you don't run into all sorts of red tape.

Does it cost anything to open an account with GUASFCU?

Georgetown 2010: yes, but they're Georgetown students.

Georgetown is also home to the largest student run corporation in the country. There is also a Student Investment Fund, where students trade stocks and such.

Andi: there might be a small set up fee (at least, there is online) however, in the long run GUASFCU will be cheaper. I pay $4/month for my Chevy Chase account (which may not seem like a lot, if I keep it for all four years, will end up being $200 over the whole time!). Chevy Chase also, while having a lot of ATMs in the DC metro area, is nonexistent everywhere else, and they charge fees on both ends. GUAFSCU now has 42,000 ATMs, and I (believe) you only get charged a fee once if you use an ATM machine other than one of the approved.

I love my GUASFCU account. The students who work there really go above and beyond to help me out.

There's no fee to join and just a $10 minimum deposit in your savings account. The bank actually just added 32,000 fee free atms across the nation, which you can look up by going to their website www.guasfcu.com. They actually have more atms than any commercial bank out there. Plus, your debit card has a picture of Jack the Bulldog.
