Any advice on starting a checking account? I know they have Chevy Chase at UMD, but there are very few of those near my home and, despite being at college, I'm still going to spend a good portion of the year at home (vacations, semester break, etc.) The ones closest to me (at home) are Wachovia and PNC; do either of these sound good?

I don't really know much about banking at all, so any advice on where to open an account would be great.

I opened an account at Chevy Chase during orientation and they told me sometime in october that all chevy Chases will become Capital Ones’s. So if you open an account at Capital you can use your bank card at Chevy and vice versa.

The bank at the Stamp (now Capital One) gave out free promos (and had free accounts)…very usual for free atm withdrawals, etc. D1 got one; D2 did not.

Both still have Bank of America accounts (convenient for mom to transfer $$ into their accounts), and there’s an ATM on Rt 1 by CVS. You can probably look up ATM locations for Wachovia/Wells Fargo and PNC online and see how close the closest (free) ATM is…
