I understand that there is a Chevy Chase Bank and a credit union on campus, located in Stamp Student Union. Does anyone have any experience or opinions of these institutions? We are from out of state. Chevy Chase does not have any banks around here. We currently bank at a credit union (love it!) and would definitely consider S having an account at a CU at school. I'm not sure about the ease of making deposits to his account from here. Anyone know?

Our cell phone service is Verizon. Does it work well at UMD? Can you hear me now? ;)

If you're son gets housing in the Ellicott Community (ellicott, la plata and hagerstown) then he will have easy access to the Chevy Chase ATM machine located outside the front entrance of Ellicott Hall.

As for cellphone, Verizon is one of the best providers in Maryland and the Washington DC metro area. Although I had ATT and it was amazing as well.

There is a Bank of America right on Route 1 which may be a little inconvenient for your son but more convenient for you- and since our kids are younger than us - a little inconvenience on their part isn't such a bad thing.

Also, except for certain parts of the Stamp Student Union,Verizon seems to work fine on campus.

Our youngest daughter is at college 8 hours away. She switched to a bank that had a branch near the college and at home. I find I use her bank more than she does. I am usually the one putting money/checks in for something that she needs. She usually just uses the money machine. I think she has only actually been to the bank at college once. But her college has a "money wall," which has about 10 different money machines. Her bank has a money machine there so she doesn't have to pay a fee. Unfortunately, I think the only ATM's on campus at Maryland belong to Chevy Chase. Bank of America is certainly within walking distance of campus.

Keep you Verizon. It is the most reliable in this area.

oregonianmom, there is a SECU ATM on campus but no physical branch as far as I know.

M&T and Bank of America (along with Chevy Chase) have branches and ATMs on Route 1 right where all the students hang out, although they do not have ATMs on campus. These are slightly less accessible but with your son living on campus, there isn't much need for cash unless you're in the Route 1 area anyway.

I have verizon on campus now, its pretty good, but almost every cell phone loses service in the stamp. They have service in the metro, its kind of sad though, I get better service underground than I do in my room.

I have Bank of America, and my family has been devoted to them since the days of Nations Bank and I can tell you it isn't much of a hassle to get money from an ATM, you just have to pay a $2 fee, but if you need to deposit checks or anything like that, its a hassle to walk to route 1, especially if you're on North Campus. If you can, open up a Chevy Chase bank account, it'll make life easier.
