Anyone have any tips on which cell phone service works best in Grinnell (we had issues with Cingular). Also any particular local bank 'the best' for checking accounts?
thanks much!

When I was visiting, Sprint worked wonderfully. Not sure about banks though.

i too would like to know the answers to these two questions...

ive heard diff. things about phones...that cingular doesnt work, that it does work...that Tmobile doesnt work/that it does...the most consistent thing ive heard is that verizon works (but i would like to know if this is true)

i have no idea about banks, but would like to know

bumpety bump bump

My daughter has Sprint and it seems to work. In terms of banks, she has an account at First Federal. It seems OK - close to campus, nice people. We set up an account when we dropped her off. Wells Fargo has a branch there if you have Wells Fargo where you live (we don't), I can see that it might be convenient. One of the great things about Grinnell is that you don't need to spend a lot of extra money - most of the entertainment is free and it's not like there are a lot of restaurants and shops to tempt you.

We did a visit in July (sadly was not accepted) but Verizon did work very well.
Good luck.

thank you all very very much for the advice. Our current service (Cingular) only worked in spots!
HWS56, I hope wherever you got accepted works out well for you. Every school has its good and bad points and there is no perfect (and as I keep trying to drill into my kids, it isn't so much where you go but the effort and what you put into it...etc etc :))

I was just wondering if anyone knows whether or not there is a bank of america anywhere near grinnell?

i did a google search to see what banks there were in grinnell, and wells fargo was the only "big" bank name that i recognized...however, you could try it and see if you can find a bank of america near there (you could also check bank of america's website for branch locations...just a thought)

thats a good idea. thanks!

The closest B of A is in Des Moines.

okay, so my phone contract is up, and i can now switch from tmobile (im visiting next week, so i guess i can see if tmobile works, but i hate their service/new phones).

i really want to switch to verizon (the whole "IN thing," plus awesome phones), but after checking on their website, verizon says they have absolutely no coverage in that part of iowa. i would really like some more assurance before i switch, so i dont find out the hard way that it doesnt work (hws56 i dont mean to disregard your post)...any other success stories with verizon?

thanks!

I use Wells Fargo, but some warnings: First, beware extra services you didn't sign up for. I noticed soon after opening my account that I had something called "BillPay" that was free for three months and would cost me a monthly fee thereafter. I had to go through the annoying process of canceling it. I've since discovered that other people have had similar experiences. Second, I'm having a hard time getting a transparent listing of all the charges Well Fargo has levied on me. They will not list it in your monthly statement, nor in your online statement, but they're there, and the last time I went the teller would not tell me (or perhaps could not).

Do you think its absolutely neccessary to switch banks? I think that if its not I might keep bank of america and just write checks on my account for grinnell to cash, since they said they would cash checks up to 100 dollars at a time.

There are around a dozen banks in Grinnell. It has the most banks per capita that I've ever seen. I'd say to just look 'em up with a yellow-pages service online and call them and/or check their websites. Good luck.

We have U.S. Cellular and get great reception in Grinnell and everywhere else in the Midwest.

i just visited the campus, and did some research on the above questions.

like sebastian said, there are definately quite a few banks in grinnell (but many appear to be only local, so you may want to keep your current bank account). you can write checks to the cashier to have them cashed, so if you need cash you can do it that way. there are also a few atms on campus, so if you dont mind the fee (or the lack there of, if your bank doesnt slap you with fees) you can also get cash by that method.

also, people there said us cellular (a local company) works, as does sprint, but that the students seem to prefer verizon the most. they said cingular can be spotty, but is okay overall. my tmobile phone seemed to work most places on campus (i didnt check it everywhere i went, but when i thought to look it was working every time).
