what banks are close to rice? commerce? bank of america?

chase is convenient because there are atm machines for chase in fondren and the student center...plus the branch located a short distance (walk-able) in the medical district.

Unfortunately, by the time you're a senior, you realize that Chase rips you off, big-time. I banked with Washington Mutual at the corner of Sunset and Kirby... actual free checking and savings, friendly employees, and a good assortment of nationwide locations. It's definitely within biking distance, even if it might be a wee bit far to just walk to in the Houston heat.

D has done fine with Chase. Now they are part of the Bank One system.

I don't know what being part of the Bank One system means (never been a Bank One customer), but I learned after my FRESHMAN year to never open an account with Chase-Manhattan.

In one year, my no-fee "student checking" account reverted to a regular checking account (with fees) THREE times, even after personally walking over to the branch office where I opened it -- twice. After the 3rd time, I just closed the account.

If you need cash and you don't want to use the ATM, you can always cash a check at the cashier's office for up to $50- no charge. There are a ton of banks and credit unions near campus. I found a link that showed all the banks and atm's nearby but I don't have time to find it right now. Will do so later. My s banks with Wachovia. They have merged with Southtrust and are increasing their presence in Texas. One big plus is that as a welcome to new Texas bankers, they are offering a deal where you will never be charged by Wachovia for using a non Wachovia ATM, and they will refund you up to $6/mo for any other banks fees for using their ATM. We bank with Wachovia and can transfer money into his account online. Works well all the way around. Here's the link about the special ATM offer for Texas customers http://www.wachovia.com/inside/page/0,,131_6338_6994_6995,00.html

Even though my s. opened his student checking account in our home state (not Texas), because he is a student in Texas they applied this offer to his account. The person I spoke to on the phone hadn't heard of this offer and I had to lead her to it on their website, but she said she took care of it on his account. I guess we'll find out next fall if he uses a non-Wachovia ATM! his past year he never used an ATM. Used his chargecard a lot and paid it off on line. The only inconvenience was handling deposits, which he would have probably had to do by mail since the branches aren't walking distance to campus, but this year he'll have a car, so it won't be a problem.

Is there a wells fargo anywhere around Rice??

4-6 blocks down Main St. in the direction of Target.

Bank of America? Don't think anyone hit that one yet.

Far side of Rice Village, then up Kirby towards 59 a few more blocks.

There may be tons of banks around the campus (walking/biking distance), but no one has said which is most convenient??

Which one has atms on or closest to the campus?

Which one has an actual branch closest to the campus?

I would appreciate any answers to these questions.

Chase is the most convenient/closest. They have the contract for the few ATMs on campus and their branch is literally across the street.

There's your answer, though personally I prefer the inconvenience (see above).

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yeah, I really don't want to do Chase. What would be the second most convenient? The third? Are the branches walkable from campus?

"Far side of Rice Village, then up Kirby towards 59 a few more blocks."

wrprice,

Is this distance walkable? Having never been to Rice, I don't know what those directions mean.

It all depends on what distance you consider "walkable," really. Yes, you can walk there but it's not a quick trip. I'm bad at estimating physical distances, but I'll say it's not so far that you'd take a bus or anything like that. Personally, it was farther than I ever wanted to walk, though.

WashingtonMutual may be the next-closest branch, but don't quote me... the difference in distance from campus to all the others is mostly trivial in my mind and all a decent walk with the exception of Chase of course.

For the Bank of America example, it's about 4 blocks from the nearest side of Rice over to Kirby and then you'll be going up a number of blocks, so let's say about 10 city blocks of distance, roughly.

If you're still concerned, the best way might be to find the addresses of the branches you're most interested in (via each bank's website) and then find them on Google Maps or MapQuest. It'll be easier to visualize.

And a final note: Wells Fargo and Chase (and another Bank of America, I think) are on Main Street. That's not a place you want to be walking at night, just to be safe. Keep that in mind if it's a concern. The banks on Kirby will be a bit saf*er* because there's more night traffic on Kirby and it's a bit better lit.

I thiiiink there's a Compass Bank on University at the corner of Morningside. It's right across the street from Two Rows, and it's only a block away from the far side of campus. People drunkenly stagger that distance all the time (right across the street are the only bars within walking distance of campus), so I'm sure it's do-able while sober. ;)

Are there any Hibernia banks close by?

Sorry, can't say that I recall any by that name. I'd check your bank's web page for branch addresses in Houston.
