2013 Banneker Key Scholarship

Since notifications are supposed to go out sometime in the next 3-5 days, I thought I'd get this thread started.

Any previous B/Kers willing to share some advice about the whole process?

My son went for the interview day last year. It was a fun day. Although the students are interviewing to see who will get full scholarships and who will get partial scholarships, the day is as much about the school showing its best face to you as you trying to impress your interviewers, in fact, more so. They’re going to do their best to treat you very well and show you the best features and aspects of Maryland. If you are invited this year, you have done very well for yourself, and I encourage you to go and to enjoy the day.

The interview itself is a small part of the day. My son’s interviewers were warm, personable, and enthusiastic about him and about inviting him to Maryland. As his parents, we were invited for the day, and even though we walked about 10 miles all around campus (so wear comfortable shoes!!), we had a great time, too.

Will you be notified if you are in the honors college but not selected?

Does anyone know when the interview day is? Are there several options?

There are several interview days, but not options. There are several days, but the only choice they offer you is between attending one particular day and not attending it. And not attending means forgoing the B/K. So when they offer you an interview, clear your calendar if you possibly can.

At least, that’s how it was in 2011.

I got my notification in the mail today, but I’m in state so I’m sure that played a role in hearing so soon. The letter is dated yesterday. Does anybody know the numbers as far as invited, full scholarship, and partial scholarships?

nilreb,

Congratulations!

In terms of how many folks are invited, how many folks take it, and what’s the mix, here’s what I remember from last year (keeping in mind that mine is a middle-aged memory): About 300 - 400 students are invited to interview (and interviewing guarantees at least a partial scholarship), around 150, plus or minus, accept, and the mix is there are somewhat more full scholarships offered than partials, but not dramatically so.

So let me see if I understand it. Being offered an interview is essentially being offered at least a partial scholarship. Of the people that interview, around 150 accept (and the other 200 or so go elsewhere?) Of the people that accept, slightly more than half of them get full rides?
Thanks!

nilreb,

If you’re offered and interview, you get a scholarship IF YOU SHOW UP FOR YOUR INTERVIEW. If not, no scholarship. I don’t know how they handle folks in extraordinary circumstances, but that’s the general rule.

If you show up for your interview (or rather, for the day of your interview - the actual interview is a small part of the day), you’ll get either a partial or a full Banneker/Key Scholarship.

“Of the people that accept, slightly more than half of them get full rides?”

My understanding is that slightly more than half of the scholarships OFFERED are full. I don’t know what the percentages are among who accept.

notjoe, that makes total sense, thanks for your help

Can anyone else confirm receipt of letter?

Not too far to send a letter from college park to montgomery!

I know that honors college students get invited to interview only; however, will we get a notification even if we were not selected to interview?

No, I don’t believe others will be contacted. Only B/K kids will get the coveted letter. Give it a few more days. I’m curious why others haven’t recieved the letter. In 2010 because of “Snowmageddon” kids recieved emails but I’m pretty sure that was an exception.
