i got the 4500 deans for 2 years...does anyone know how we can apply for departmental scholarhsips?

Mouzia -- I started a separate thread, since this one is supposed to be B/K.

Daughter attended late Feb(?) B/K interview sessions.

Breakfast(?) was very low key(hah!) and only had about 6 students during the 45 minutes we were there. There are multiple breakfast rooms depending upon the field you're going into. More professors and admissions people(8?) than students. Also had 3 upperclassmen to talk about opportunities at UMD. Basically they're selling UMD to the students.

Sat in on a large lecture. Kids up front paying attention, some kids at back on Facebook, internet, etc. Much different than H.S. Made it easy to explain how you have to be ready for the class, because in college they won't hold your hand. Either you're ready and get something out of it, or you get steam rolled.

Tour of the Honors dorms. Nice part about being in Honors(all B/K are in Honors), is the kids can project which of the 3 primary dorms they'll be in. Helps visualize getting around, etc.

Interview was 2 v. 1. Professor and admissions officer. Professor asked about a class she had taken in his field and what she got out of the class. Admissions officer asked about her application essay. Give and take between D and interviewers, with no set agenda apparently.

Numbers -

27,000 applicants
9,000 considered for Honors
800 accepted into Honors
384 offered B/K
130 B/K accepted last year(roughly 1/3...that's why this is a 'come to UMD' event, many kids have multiple offers).
"Slightly over half get the full award" - Several people made that comment. Actual rates, based on raw data from two officials, worked out to be 55% and 60%. So the range might be 50-60%.

Does anyone know around when we can expect to have a decision about BK? I think the interviews are over, and was wondering if anyone knew when we're due to hear back?

What were the average SATs for B/K invitees this year? I suspect the minimum SAT for consideration is over 1500. Anyone get an invite with scores below that?

I got invited with a 1430

I had a 1420.
It seems like a lot more goes into it than just test scores.

^^ that's great. My s had a 1550 and was told that his scores were pretty average last year for the B/K. We have a daughter that will be applying next year.

My in-state son had a 1530 & 4.59 weighted GPA with very good ECs and recs and didn't get the B/K invite. He did get a $8000 President's award, though...but was disappointed about the B/K.

Hi -ginab591- and -rschlegel420-
Can you both share the stat which you think why you are invited to B/K ? Any outstanding EC?
The people I know who are invited are all straight A for the 4 years HS plus SAT 2300+

Thanks

2200 97/100 average for high school. (4.0)
Hispanic Female from New York who under the definition of the government is physically handicapped, and missed a lot of school due to undiagnosed illness. I've written 3 unpublished novels to make up for my lack of EC's. Hispanic merit scholar. Girl Scout since kindergarten and Gold Award recipient. I've also done some independent research and taken classes through Johns Hopkins and Syracuse University. 9 AP's and the rest of my classes have been honors.

2120 4.0 GPA

-My EC's are very good. NHS, Newspaper editor, lots of volunteering, Chairman of a civic involvement board in my city government, organinized two meet the candidates forums for my local mayoral and school board candidates in the fall of 2007.
-NMSF, and I designated UMd as my first choice.
-I'd like to think otherwise, but being OOS may have had something to do with it? Idk.
-I think my essay was really good too, it basically addressed my intended major/career and why I wanted to be in that field.

Yeah, I'm also in NHS.

Yeah, I'm also in NHS.

How soon can we expect to hear back about BK scholarships?

Need some others' perspective here, please. Our D was accepted into Honors and Gemstone; we're instate. I believe only 800 get into Honors, and then only around 192 of those get into Gemstone. So on the merit side of things.....we get not even a sniff of B/K interview and the only merit $ is $1500 for a single year, not even multiple years; so that comes out to $375 in merit annually.
Now we're first timers at this, but this doesn't compute!
How can someone get accepted into Honors/Gemstone on 1 hand, but not be worthy of any merit $?
Appreciate anyone else's opinion on this, who perhaps might know how UMD figures things. Can reply back on here or privately; thanks!

Selection to Gemstone is based on interest in participating in group research projects and by itself would not make a student more qualified for the B/K Scholarship or merit money. Not all Honors students expressed an interest in participating in this type of research and many did not indicate an interest in it on their application, therefore were not considered for it. So selection to Gemstone would not necessarily mean that a student would be more eligilbe than the next for B/K consideration or more merit money. I believe the entire application is evaluated for B/K consideration and merit money including essay, test scores, EC's and teacher recommendations.

Does anyone know if there is any way to negotiate with UMD for more merit aid? I've know of friends who were able to negotiate with private colleges but I haven't heard any stories about negotiating with UMD for additional merit aid. Is there any kind of appeals process? I think my son was shorted a bit with a 5k Presidential award, but, I'm biased, of course.

There are different Departmental scholarship will announce
Which school your son is? I know Engineering department will send out the $$ in the earlier April.

Got Banneker/Key letter today: partial including 36K over four years (covering tuition) plus the book allowance and the ipod deal. I didn’t get the travel allowance or room and board, but then again, I’m local.
