Barnard Class of '20 Discussion

I wrote about the photographer Francesca Woodman for my woman-in-history and how basically she’s a big influence on my own artwork and how her work represents what it’s like to be a young woman really well (my favorite essay imo) & then for my majored in unafraid I wrote about wearing a feminist t-shirt in middle school (which did not make me the most popular 11 year old on the block).

Also, editing to ask if anyone knows what time of day they normally send the “heads-up on your decision date” email?

My majored in unafraid essay was about vegetarianism, my woman-in-history was Benazir Bhutto and what she means to me as someone who wants to enter the political arena, and my main common app essay was about Sleater-Kinney and feminism. I thought my woman in history and why Barnard essays were the strongest of the three. All of your essay topics sound so great!!

@extrapeppermint did you recieve your decision yet? Because I could have swore I saw your accepted post in the RD results last night. Either that or I dreamed it /:slight_smile:

@MLMarylandB I wish I had received my decision! Sadly, no.

I wrote about meeting Margaret Atwood (one of my fav authors!) for the woman in history, and then for the unafraid essay I wrote about finding the courage to say goodbye to a best friend (I know, lame).

@extrapeppermint A few years ago I think they came out around noon pst/3pm est…I’ma link previous Barnard Discussion Threads if you want to take a look.

@charmandquark I didn’t but looking back on it I really wish that I had applied to Howard. Did you apply to any?
@extrapeppermint that’s so cool I really admire people who aren’t afraid to speak their mind and stand up for their beliefs, especially at such a young age
@eebee88 I’m a pescetarian and I didn’t even think to incorporate that part of myself into an essay, so that’s really interesting!!

@olivebar I did! I applied to Howard and Spelman. Have you visited either?

I wrote about women form the suffragist movement and issues on reproductive health/women’s rights today. For my majored in unafraid I wrote about going to a high school that was totally unfamiliar to everything I had known. As for other schools I applied to, Bard, Connecticut College, Wheaton and Holy Cross. Barnard is the last school I need to hear back from!

ekk it’s crazy how this process is almost over! Now lets move on to more important topics, favorite move/tv show.

@TeaQueen I like where your priorities are at.

I love Star Trek (did my icon give it away?), HTGAWM, Avatar The Last Airbender, House, Daredevil, Better Call Saul/Breaking Bad. I recently started House of Cards and I love it.
My newest favorite movie Zootopia <3

And ya’ll?

@charmandquark OMG you watched Avatar too! And yes I loved Zootopia too! Did you also watch The Legend of Korra?

So is it safe to guess we’re not getting an email today? This not knowing is driving me nuts!

@extrapeppermint I think by Thursday or Friday hopefully.

AHHHHHHH @charmandquark House of Cards is so, so good. A perk of living in Maryland is the fact that they shoot nearby and allow locals to be extras in the show (few of my friends did it and had a blast). Other fav TV shows that are on right now are Silicon Valley and Game of Thrones. Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and Twin Peaks are definitely at the top of my list.

For my woman in history/fiction one I wrote about Hermione Granger. I felt really boring when I wrote it, but I talked to my interviewer about it and because Harry Potter has been such an influential part of my life, she said that it was great. I wrote my majored in unafraid question about going to boarding school. My why Barnard question was probably my best but ???

I also applied to UNC Chapel Hill, Case Western, Meredith, Mary Baldwin, and Hofstra.

My favorite TV shows are Parks and Rec, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, most reality tv (its addicting), anything made by Food Network, BBC Merlin, Agents of Shield, and Jessica Jones.

I’m sooooo nervous

I wrote about Audrey Hepburn for my woman in history essay. My majored unafraid essay was deciding to come home from foreign exchange early and having face what thought a failure. said that I’ve wanted go Barnard since 8th grade because favorite book character goes there. common app work tobacco control how it is social justice issue. I think supplements were pretty strong because locked myself away half of winter break and just wrote.

Hello everyone! I’m new to the thread (and I realize I am extremely late as well). I am from California and I am anxiously waiting for results to come!
I am going in undeclared and I am also waiting to hear back my results from the Manhattan School of Music lesson exchange program for violin.
Good luck to everyone! Hopefully only a few more days!

Where are all of you from ?

@scholar861 YES I DID AAGHHH. Avatar is still better imo, but I enjoyed Korra too. Toph is my favorite character, but I’m basically Katara, motherly instincts and all.

Woman in history-Janis Joplin, made it kind of like a time travel story, with allusions to/elements of the Wizard of Oz(even if I get rejected I will always be proud of this essay)
Majoring in unafraid-getting over my fear of mentally ill people(I know it sounds really closed minded and inappropriate for a college essay and will probably not bode well with the ADCOM,but what’s done is done and in the end I’ll end up where I need to be)
Common app-how seeing one of my mom’s plays made me realize how much I like searching for answers/and questioning things(like whether outer space ever ends and if it does, where does it end)
Why Barnard-valued the intellectually thriving community that Barnard has to offer it and connected it to my family’s tradition of going out to eat(notably Ethiopian food, which is typically shared amongst those at the table)and how it’s an act of communion where we can speculate over our inquiries and said I believed Barnard’s community would be similar to the community my family exhibits when we’re eating out.
