RD Application Deadline is: Jan 1

Barnard just extended their RD deadline to Jan 16th. Why would they do this just hours from the midnight deadline? I’d assume most applicants have applied or are very close to it. Possible they didn’t get enough applications? Or everyone has COVID and needs an extension?

we didn’t get the email until this morning – AFTER their deadline. which meant D23 worked hard to finish it the last few days. Poor timing of their decision…

Or possibly just the reasons Columbia University (incl. Barnard) announced at the end of last week:

Columbia Undergraduate Admissions extended the regular decision deadline for Columbia College and School of Engineering and Applied Science applicants in China affected by the current COVID-19 outbreak from Jan. 1 to Jan. 10 at 11:59 p.m. at applicants’ local time zone. Dean of Undergraduate Admissions and Financial Aid Jessica Marinaccio wrote about the change in a Dec. 30 email to applicants and high school counselors.
“We hope this flexibility helps to relieve some of the stress and anxiety that students, families and educators might be feeling during this public health crisis. We want to assure you that we are committed to working with students who wish to apply to Columbia,” Marinaccio wrote.
Barnard has also pushed its deadline from Jan. 4 to Jan. 16 at 11:59 p.m. at applicants’ local time zone for students applying from Mainland China, according to a Dec. 29 email sent by Ruby Bhattacharya, Barnard’s director of recruitment and selection.

Later that limitation to explicitly Mainland China was lifted.

This is in line with steps taken by other colleges such as Vassar, MIT, Northwestern, UChicago, UPenn, etc.

I was wondering what the reason was for- mistakenly thought maybe power outage because of cold weather issues over the holidays.

I wonder since the deadline was extended whether the decision date will also be pushed out for more review time.

Has anyone gotten a likely letter yet? I’ve heard other schools (like Columbia and Uchicago) have sent theirs out.

not for us. I don’t actually understand how one gets that “likely” letter in any case… athletes? URM? just top students?

Mostly top students that a college targets to increase the chance of that applicant accepting an admittance. But I’ve seen some people who’ve gotten one from Barnard and they usually send these in one big wave. But only around 5% of admitted applicants get a likely letter, so! I’m trying to not stress about it

Hm, if 5% of 500 RD admitted students get such a letter, then that would be 25 people. Not quite my idea of a “wave”

Anyway - the absence of a “likely” letter is nothing to worry extra about.

When does Barnard release decisions? 4pm EDT March 30th?

Received email that decision will be posted March 29 at 7pm EST and to be logged out of the portal before that date because if you are logged in, the email with the link to the portal that will allow you to view your decision will not be sent. Also…kinda weird that the high school counselor is CC’ed on that email, no? No other school has done that, or at least it’s not viewable on the emails, so maybe that was an accident on their part.

D23 will be on an international flight then - guess she’ll find out in a jet-lagged blur in another country the next day…

Maybe she will have wifi on the flight and be able to log in?

hm mine was cc’ed too and the only other time that has happened was with upenn for their “thank you for applying” email

Quite normal.

You’re right, it was an arbitrary number I got from somewhere/one lol. And yeah, totally nothing to stress about!

Hi! Does anyone else’s CSS Profile (on Barnard’s financial aid checklist) say a date of 2/22?

My D’s does.

Did something like this happen to the other schools that your daughter applied to? Do you think it means anything?
