Barnard College Class of 2023 RD

i got an interview with the BOP, does that mean anything?

@theblackestday I’d definitely take it as a good sign that you’re qualified for the program and a good fit for the college!

Also, did they email you?

@SuperBigMusicLover Yes they did. i didn’t even now about the program before they did :frowning:

@theblackestday Congrats! When did they tell you about it?

@Selenarahman Thanks! They emailed me on February 28th.

Is there a way to apply for BOP? Or do they just send out emails to prospective qualifiers?

@hssenior191919 In the application portal if you self reported your scores, there was an option that you could check off to be considered for the program

@hssenior191919 i didn’t do that^^^^they just sent me an email

@theblackestday do you mind sharing your stats

I just checked my common app portal and it only has an option to apply for HEOP. I’m an out of state resident so I didn’t check any of the special programs…

@hssenior191919 I think that there was an option in the Barnard portal…the one at connect.barnard.edu/apply in the section where you could self-report your scores.

I think that they also screen for applicants even if you don’t check the box to be considered.

Also, @theblackestday did you have a regular interview separate from the BOP program?

@SuperBigMusicLover No I did not. @Selenarahman one of my college counselors from school said that she knows the person who interviewed me since middle school so im thinking that might’ve helped. My stats aren’t that stellar btw

@Selenarahman Hi again! I forgot to mention one thing. After the interview, the representative asked if I had any questions and so I asked away, mainly about the process after the interview. He mentioned that the interviews are going to continue until March 15th after which they will sit in the admissions committee and make a decision . I really hope you get an interview within the next week. Good luck!

@SuperBigMusicLover No I did not. @Selenarahman One of my college counselors from school said that she knows the person who interviewed me since middle school so im thinking that might’ve helped. My stats aren’t that stellar btw. Also they told me that they help first gen students make the transition to college (I understood it as like an Upward Bound for Barnard) and that they have a summer program in the summer before freshman year for their students and students from other opportunity programs.

@theblackestday Thanks for the info! I was asking because I completed an interview in November and didn’t know whether I’d have to complete another one for the program or if they just use the one that I had…if that makes sense lol

Oh, and you have to be first gen? On my common app, I checked ‘no’ for that question. My mother completed her classes at an online (for profit) degree program a few years ago, but didn’t pay to go to the graduation ceremony, so she doesn’t (at least physically) have the degree. I emailed the admissions office about that because that may have disqualified me from the program rip

So yeah, I’m not sure that I’d qualify to be first gen, but I did had to inform myself about the whole college process and I’m the first to go to a 4 yr uni right after hs.

Edit: also, when I looked up Kaplan on the common app college search while filling in her info, it didn’t show up, but I didn’t want mislead the committee. Not sure what to think about that

@SuperBigMusicLover uhh i know he mentioned first gen but im not sure if that’s a requirement for the program. it doesnt say so here https://barnard.edu/sites/default/files/bop_fact_sheet_web_13-14.pdf
Also id say you’re first gen btw https://firstgen.naspa.org/blog/defining-first-generation

@theblackestday Oh, okay. Whew! I also remember not seeing it, so that’s good to hear. Thanks!

Time to update and email the rest of my colleges now lmao

@KlausB Congrats on your interview! I probably won’t get an interview since next week is the last week. Did they make you bring your parents income forms? I made a mistake on my FAFSA and out my parents income on the student section but I emailed them in the middle of February. My sat is a 1240 and my gpa would probably be around a 3.5 I’m not sure I go to an ib school. Idk but I’m still hopeful.

Quick question… Leaving all my stats aside do you guys think that an international student who is first gen and is asking for substantial financial would have a chance at Barnard? I’m worried that since most universities are need-sensitive for international students it may affect my decision.

It might be a silly thought but yeah.

A couple more weeks!!
