Barnard - Fall 2018 Transfer

omg me too :frowning:

My checklist says they haven’t received half of my application materials, many of which I sent in several months ago. I’m worried that they may have gotten lost or not attached to my file, but maybe they’re just behind in updating the checklist. Is anyone else having this problem?

@ncgirl1667 YES! I submitted my transfer college report like a month ago, but on the application checklist it appears as missing. All the other schools I applied to have already received my transfer college report except for Barnard. :frowning:

Hey, I’m a sophomore transfer hopeful too! I emailed them about my missing transfer report and course descriptions that I had sent and they finally replied saying that they had them and not to worry about things that weren’t checked off. From what I’ve seen, they’re not super responsive through email so I’m thinking that it may be the same with the checklist.

Hi everyone! I’m a junior at Barnard who transferred in Fall 2016 (beginning of my sophomore year), and I somehow found my way to this page (apparently procrastinating on a paper leads me as far as College Confidential), so maybe I can help answer some of your questions.

First off, housing: Barnard does have a housing shortage, being in NYC and all, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to get housing as a transfer (as I thankfully did). Indeed, most students who live far from campus (I believe they count “far” as 50+ miles away or something like that) get housing. I encourage that those of you who are admitted start a Facebook group where you can form groups for off-campus apartment sharing –– that’s what kids from my CC transfer thread 2 years ago did and it worked out well for them! Other transfers who aren’t on CC will inevitably find the FB group and join, giving you guys even more roommate options. I seriously wouldn’t be too terrified, though I understand how nerve-wracking the prospect of NYC housing can be. Worst-case scenario, you end up living in a cramped 2-bedroom walk-up on 150th St., and yet, that’s only a 15-minute subway ride from campus (and it might even cost less than Barnard housing!).

Second, don’t worry about those first-year admit rates! The transfer rates aren’t closely tied to the first-year ones. For example, while the first-year rate has been dropping steadily for years, the transfer rate has just kinda hovered around 20-25% in recent history. It’ll probably be the same this year.

Third, contacting admissions re: questions/missing materials/etc: I was lucky in that there was a phenomenally kind and responsive head of transfer admissions when I applied, but she sadly left right after I got in. I have no idea what the new one is like, but I do know that if you call the admissions office phone number listed on Barnard’s website (during business hours lol), you’ll get a kind and knowledgeable student admissions representative who will definitely help you out.

Fourth, application anxieties: I just want to say how impressed I am by everyone applying again following a first-year waitlist/rejection. I, frankly, doubt I could have put my ego on the shelf enough to do that, and I admire your persistence in going after your goals. As for stats, I know that the average college GPA for a Barnard transfer is a 3.6, so definitely don’t think that the same standard of perfect grades carries over from freshman admissions. They care more about your growth and persistence than anything, so your college grades matter more (to the extent that your high school grades don’t raise red flags). And, if anyone feels like giving their app a final extra boost and is able to take a trip to campus, I recommend taking a campus tour. They collect your info when you arrive for the tour, which they add to your application file, AND you can then do what I did, which is send in an application supplement stating what you learned on your tour (that you didn’t know before) that makes you want to come to Barnard even more / makes you think you’re an even better fit than before. Just a thought in case anyone feels like doing it, since it definitely can’t hurt.

I hope this helps –– I know I could have used this info 2 years ago! It’s a stressful process (I fully attest to having cried in the shower for several consecutive nights before decisions came out), but you guys sound like a strong bunch. Don’t hesitate to comment with any other questions you might want me to answer, and I’ll most likely be an orientation leader for transfers this fall, so maybe I’ll see some of you in August!

Just visiting this thread as today I got really bad anxiety about not being accepted. I really hope things will work out – everyone, including the rejected students, sound like super high-achieving people. The college application process is almost just as scary the second (or third) time around, for sure. I am going to be calling them on Monday just to ask some questions and reassure myself slightly. My parents are not happy with my desire to transfer and it would just break my heart to get rejected again.

hi!! thank you so much for all of your info  i was just wondering how important you think the midterm report is in the acceptance decision?

Has everyone else’s checklist been updated? Mine finally shows they have all of my materials!

hey guys, did you send in the course description for courses you have taken or the entire course catalog?

@AnArcticMonkey I sent in course descriptions. I’m pretty sure it specifically said to send in descriptions for all college courses taken and in progress. You’re not supposed to send in the entire catalogue. The information should be on the website.

@zdiflo13 I think the midterm report is just to make sure that your grades have not changed significantly since first semester. Slight differences shouldn’t make or break your application! Hope that helps

@HayleyRT1997 So it would be fine to have 1 b in a one credit hour class and have As in all the rest?

@HayleyRT1997 Thanks for so much info! On my tour last fall, the guide mentioned there was a dorm that housed mostly transfer students. She didn’t know a lot when I asked about it – do you know what dorm this is/if transfer are actually usually placed together on campus? Thank you!

Does it mean anything if I am in the registrar’s database? Are all applicants in the system? Thanks!

This thread is so quiet…is anyone else as nervous as I am?

@KG5APR I’m nervous, too! But I try to think only in positives. I believe everything happens for a reason and in its own time, so if it is meant for me and you and everyone else to go to Barnard, we’ll be accepted. Don’t get caught up in negative thoughts. Nothing good ever comes from them! Good luck! I’m sure the thread will be more active at the end of the month.

@KG5APR Where do you find the registrar’s database? How did you get to it?

@vinylraincoat You have to call them. Idk if it means anything though.

HEY did you submit the CSS profile? I don’t know if Barnard requires it, but did any of you girls send it?

@NathaliaNhem Yes, Barnard definitely requires the CSS Profile, as do most private schools. The priority deadline was March 15. If you have not submitted it, do it now and contact the financial aid office immediately. When applying to colleges it is important to keep an eye on financial aid deadlines and requirements. Now, if you are not looking for aid from the school, you only have to submit the FAFSA. However, I am just going off memory so you may need to double check that.
